Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for managing a relationship between one target volume and one source volume. For each of the source volume and target volume, the memory includes: (i) at least one element, wherein each element represents a range of sequential data units in the volume; (ii) at least one relationship entry, wherein each relationship entry represents one relationship; (iii) at least one element pointer associating one element with one relationship entry, wherein the data units represented by the element are part of the relationship represented by the relationship entry that the pointer associates with the element; and (iv) one relationship pointer for each relationship entry associating the relationship entry with volume metadata, wherein the volume metadata provides information on the relationship represented by the relationship entry.

Abstract: Asynchronous remote data duplexing at a distant location is performed from copies based at a primary site storage subsystem using first and second pluralities of subsystems 12, 14 at primary and remote sites respectively. Each of the first plurality of subsystems is independently coupled to one or more of the second plurality of subsystems. The first plurality of subsystems are interconnected and the second plurality of subsystems are also interconnected. The method utilizes checkpoint messages to maintain sequence integrity between the first and second plurality of subsystems without the use of a centralized communications service.

Abstract: A remote data shadowing system provides synchronous, storage based, real time disaster recovery wherein a secondary site is located remote from the primary site. An error recovery program at the primary site quiesces applications running thereat for performing error recovery procedures and signalling both primary and secondary locations that failed duplex has occurred. The error recovery program determines the cause of failed duplex, and if error recovery is successful, duplex mode is resumed. If the error recovery program is unable to perform error recovery successfully, then further write updates at the primary site are prohibited and an error message is communicated to operators at both the primary and secondary sites.

Abstract: Provided are a method, system, and program for managing a relationship between one target volume and one source volume. Information is maintained in memory on an existing relationship between at least one source volume and at least one target volume, comprising: (i) at least one element, wherein each element represents a range of sequential data units in the volume; (ii) at least one relationship entry, wherein each relationship entry represents one relationship; and (iii) at least one element pointer associating one element with one relationship entry, wherein the data units represented by the element are part of the relationship represented by the relationship entry that the pointer associates with the element. A new relationship between at least one target volume and at least one source volume is added. Further, added is a new relationship entry in the memory representing the new relationship and one new element pointer is added in the memory for each element including data units included in the new relationship to associate the element with the new relationship entry, wherein the data units represented by the element are part of the new relationship.

Abstract: A method and system disclosed for enhanced efficiency of backup copying of designated datasets stored within storage devices (61) coupled to the data processing system via a storage control unit (65) having memory (66) therein. Application execution is temporarily suspended to form a dataset logical-to-physical address concordance to be utilized to administer backup copying. Application initiated updates to uncopied portions of the designated datasets are temporarily deferred until sidefiles of the affected portions are written to memory (66). Portions of the designated datasets are then accessed and copied utilizing selected data retrieval command sequences. A sidefile status query is appended to said command sequences and the presence of data within memory (66) is determined. The sidefiles are then accessed and copied to alternate storage locations in a backup copy order defined by the address concordance.

Abstract: 1533833 Storage arrangements INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 15 June 1977 [30 June 1976] 25032/77 Heading G4A In apparatus for rotating by 90 degrees video data having 2048 bits per scan line, the data is deserialized and stored, parallel by byte, in successive row locations of a memory (40, Fig. 2, not shown) holding 2048 bytes in 8 rows, by incrementing address counter (41). Read out into registers (50-57) is effected column by column by incrementing the top 3 bits of the address counter for each state of the bottom 8 bits from which the rotated data may be read to an 8 by 8 storage array (60-67) so that corresponding bits of the 8 read out bytes are stored in the same column. Preferably two memories 118, 122 (Fig. 3) are used, one being read out whilst the other is loaded under the control of two counters (204, 206, Fig. 4, not shown) the first incremented normally for loading and the second having its top 3 bits incremented for each state of the bottom 8 bits for unloading, the top 3 bits being decoded to select to which if registers 150-157 the read out data is fed.
