    Abstract: A direct view display device comprises a pair of conductive electrodes in spaced relationship and a recording medium having the properties of being both photo-ionizable and capable of electro-chemically producing colored species occupies the space between the electrodes. The display device is exposed to an optical pattern of radiation to which the recording material is sensitive to produce a latent image, and a potential is applied between the electrodes to produce a very dense image corresponding to the optical pattern. The image can be erased by reversing the potential between the electrodes so that the expose and enhance process can be repeated.

    Abstract: NON-DESTRUCTIVE READOUT SCHEME FOR HOLOGRAPHIC STORAGE SYSTEM of the Invention A non-destructive readout scheme suitable for use with a holographic storage system having data stored in three spatial dimensions and one frequency dimension is described. The readout scheme and the holographic storage system use a preferred storage material which undergoes a reversible photochromic reaction involving two inhomogeneously broadened absorption bands. Information is written into the storage system by exposing the material to a holographic interference pattern of light at a frequency within either one of the two absorption bands. The non-destructive readout scheme involves reconstructing the original information by sensing the change in the index of refraction at a frequency just outside of and near either one of the two absorption bands. The readout scheme also includes sensing refractive index changes near one or more narrow absorption lines within either absorption band.

    Abstract: A two-dimensional light deflector is shown which comprises a cylindrical member having a plurality of holograms recorded thereon. A collimated light beam is directed to illuminate the hologram cylinder and rotation of the hologram cylinder provides a line scan which is at an angle of about 45 DEG with respect to the plane of rotation of the cylinder. The azimuthal position of the line scan can be varied by the rotation of a small mirror which directs the illumination beam. As a consequence, a two-dimensional raster scan on a cylindrical image surface is produced.
