Abstract: A user of a remote computer accesses a target computer (e.g., the user's home PC) via the Internet. To initiate the protocol, the user launches an application which, via the Internet, sends a special request to the user's home e-mail address. If the home computer is not currently connected to the Internet, the user's Internet Service Provider (ISP) dials a telephone number for the home computer. The home computer automatically answers, and the ISP sends authentication information to the computer to establish an Internet connection. With the connection established, an IP address is sent back to the user, which can then be used to invoke X-10 functions, telnet sessions, or other activities with the target computer.

Abstract: Method has the following steps: assignment of global bookmarks to corresponding position addresses so that each position address is linked to a bookmark, so that a position address is accessed when a global bookmark is selected; storage and management of global bookmarks and corresponding addresses in a database and updating of the database if changes are made to either bookmarks or addresses. The invention enables a web-browser or other computer application to select a bookmark and access the web object linking and embedding (WOLE) database and generate links to it. Abstract: A method and apparatus for encoding transactions for goods and services usin g an e-receipt is provided. A consumer and a merchant conduct a commercial transaction using a distributed data processing system. An electronic receip t is recorded on a removable storage medium at a first data processing system. The electronic receipt contains data concerning the commercial transaction. The removable storage medium is then read at a second data processing system . After validating the electronic receipt, another commercial transaction or another stage of the original commercial transaction may be performed. The electronic receipt may be validated for a warranty claim on goods or service s subject to the purchase transaction, and the removable storage medium may be an optical card or a smart card, either of which is able to store thousands of e-receipts and other electronic documents related to a commercial transactio n, with the integrity of each guaranteed through digital signature, digital certificate, etc.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for adaptively targeting advertisements to a specific client computer from a server within a distributed data processing system is provided. As a user of the client browses the World Wide Web, the material that is downloaded to the client constitutes a datastream. At some location during the routing of the datastream, either on the server or at the client, the datastream is scanned to generate a list of keywords that are present within the datastream. The datastream may be analyzed in real-time or cached and analyzed on a delayed basis. The generated list of keywords represents a summary of the content that appears to be the focus of interest of the user. The keywords are compared against a database of advertisements, and the server selects an advertisement that matches the user's area of interest in comparison to the analysis of the user's browsing history. The selected advertisement is then inserted into the datastream to be routed to the client. In consideration for viewing targeted advertisements and to entice a Web viewer to allow the monitoring of a datastream so that targeted advertisements may be placed into the datastream, a Web viewer may receive online connection service for tree, for a reduced cost, at a premium level of service, or for other some other value, such as frequent viewer credits that may be exchanged for goods and services.
