Abstract: 1,016,278. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. May 26, 1964 [June 14, 1963], No. 21795/64. Heading B6F. A typewriter, wherein each character and each of a number of machine functions is selected by actuation of an interposer, has at least one special key-lever movable into one of two positions in the first of which one interposer only is actuated and in the second of which two or more interposers are actuated in a predetermined sequence. In the second position a constantly recurring word or syllable may be automatically typed, or the same letter may be repeated, or a number underlined. As shown, the machine comprises a part-spherical type head 1, Fig. 1, which is rotated and tilted to select a character, and moves along the platen 5 for letter-spacing &c. Selective movement of the head 1 is effected by linkages selectively operated by lugs on the bottom edge of a selected interposer such as 49, Fig. 1, the rear edge of which is moved downwardly into the path of arms 32 on a rotating shaft 31 when the corresponding key 7 is depressed. The shaft 31 is rotated 180 degrees for each printing cycle and is driven by gearing 28 ... 30 from a shaft 12 coupled by a normally inoperative clutch 13 to a motor-driven shaft 9. A special key such as key 7 for printing either the letter " T " or the word " THE " has associated with it three interposers 48, 49, 50. Pivoted on the key 7 is a member 46, Fig. 2b, normally held by a spring 21 in a position where a bar 46a thereon is just above a lug 49a on the centre interposer 49. Partial depression of the key 7 thus causes downward movement of the interposer 49. A lug 49c on the lower edge of the interposer 49 then operates a bail 26 which through a link 27, Fig. 1, pivots a catch 15 to release the clutch 13 and cause the shaft 31 to rotate 180 degrees and effect a printing cycle. A lug 32 on the shaft 31 moves the interposer 49 endwise so that lugs thereon position the type head 1 for printing the letter " T." If it is required to print the word " THE," the key 7 is depressed to its fullest extent in which position it is held by a hook 49b on the interposer 49 engaging a latch 45 on the key. The interposers 48, 50 have on their lower edges lugs to select the type faces " H," " E " respectively and a lug similar to lug 49c to operate the bail 26. On their upper edges are lugs 48a, 50a respectively with inclined edges at their tops. As the interposer 49 returns to its rest position (i.e. rightwardly, Fig. 2e) after effecting printing, its lug 49a engages bar 46a and moves it against lug 48a so as to depress interposer 48 and cause the letter " H " to be printed. Similarly, as interposer 48 returns to its rest position, its lug 48a engages bar 46a with the lug 50a of interposer 50 so as to effect printing of the letter " E." A retaining pawl 51 holds the member 46 in the positions to which it is moved during these operations. As the last interposer 50 returns to its normal position, it moves bar 46a rightwardly against a lug on the latch 45, to uncouple the latch 45 from the hook 49b and permitting all the parts to return to their initial positions. Letter spacing.-A cam 37 on the printing- cycle shaft 31 operates the escapement through follower 38 and link 39 at each printing operation. The escapement can also be operated for letter-spacing by the action of the space bar on a bail 40, connected by members 41, 42, 43 to the escapement. An extension 50c, Fig. 2c, may be provided on the last-operating interposer 50 to engage the bail 40 and provide an additional letter-spacing after an automatic printing operation. Underscoring.-A special key may be provided for underlining, e.g. a two-digit number. In this case, the key is associated with four interposers which in turn cause a back space, a back space, printing of an underline and printing of another underline.

Abstract: A rotary-to-linear motion conversion device comprises a rotatable shaft (32) and an annular cam surface member (36) encircling the shaft (32) and pivotally mounted on a bracket (44) secured to the shaft (32). The member (36) is engaged by an arm (27) of a pivoted cam follower (26) biased towards the member (36). The portion of the member (36) diametrally opposite the pivot (40) engages a slider (48) rotatable with the shaft (32). The slider (48) engages a flange (56) and a collar (60). Between the collar (60) and a fixed stop (64) are four selectively withdrawable interposers (70, 72, 74 and 76) of increasing incremental widths. Two such devices are included in a typewriter character selection system to control tilt and rotation of a typehead. The tilt and rotate cam members are mounted so that they pivot to vary the cam rise. The rise of the cam is controlled by the interposers under the influence of the keyboard.

Abstract: 1,231,591. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 27 Aug., 1968 [18 Sept., 1967], No. 40817/68. Heading B6F. Power operated lever machines.-A power operated typewriter comprises type levers 22 connected to actuator members 15 by connecting links 21, each actuating member being selectively engageable with a reciprocable bail 28 by means of a corresponding key lever 11. Depression of a key 14 acts to urge an actuator member 15 leftwardly, a resilient finger 44 thereby being disengaged from a latching surface 43 on the actuator member, enabling the finger to lift a bail 46 which acts through a lever 47 to initiate engagement of a half-revolution clutch 48, so connecting the drive from a motor 50 to a drive shaft 34. A pair of cams 34 are thereby rotated, lifting the bail 28 to effect an impression. Key interlocks.-Simultaneous actuation of two or more type levers is prevented by a ball interlock 40 which will receive only one tail 38 of an actuator member 15. If a second key is depressed during the cycle of operation of a first key, the corresponding actuator member 15 travels far enough to release the finger 44 so that the clutch 48 remains engaged for a further half revolution to permit a corresponding impression action. Impact adjustment.-The actuator member 15 is driven by the bail 28 for a first part of its pivotal motion after which a projection 55 thereof strikes a rod 56 and the momentum of the actuator member and type lever carry them to effect impression. During the second part of the motion of the member 15, a tab 18 thereof engages the finger 44 which thereby controls the impact. Collective adjustment of the impact is effected by adjustment of the fulcrum of the fingers 44 by movement of a rod (61), Fig. 2, not shown. Letter-by-letter adjustment is achieved by screws 58, 59 which are selectively brought into operative position according to the case shift position. Rebound preventing.-The momentum of an actuator member 15 after impression is absorbed by a resilient finger (67, Fig. 2) which engages a surface 68 of the actuator member. Repeat power action preventing.-If the key lever is still depressed when the actuator member 15 returns after an impression action, the tab 18 strikes a camming surface 74 of the key lever and displaces the key lever out of operative position to prevent repeat action.

Abstract: 1,154,111. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 3 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 192/67. Heading B6F. Machines with types on spherical surfaces; power assisted type actions; permutation typeselecting mechanisms.-A typewriter having a spherical type head 72 mounted on a traversible carriage (not shown) is provided with a character selection mechanism comprising a stack of slides 60, and a plurality of probe members 50 one for each character key lever 20 the probe members being provided with a pair of opposed edges 51, 52 to probe coded slots 61, 62 disposed along opposite edges of the slides and associated with upper or lower case characters, respectively. Depression of a key lever 20 causes a primary dobber 26 to rock downwardly a control link 40 whose lug 47 depresses its associated probe member 50 whereby the latter is biased by a leaf spring 15 to move in one or otherdirection along line L to probe the respective coded slots 61, 62. Probe member is latched in its position by a lug 54, 58 which enters an aperture 35 in a bracket 34. Depression of probe member 50 enables a one-revolution clutch 13 through link 18 and latch 14, whereby a cam controlled slide mechanism 64 releases the slides 60 for movement under bias of springs 63 to rock character selecting latches 11. Slides 60 are then restored by the mechanism 64 and the probe member 50 is restored by the link 40 which is moved forwardly by a leaf spring 43 attached to a bail 42 which is reciprocated by a cam 44 and then upwardly by a leaf spring 46, whereby the arm 59 of probe member 50 is raised when a lever 45 has moved the probe member to release its lug 54 or the link 40, during its forward movement has engaged the arm 59 to release its lug 58 from engagement with the aperture 35. Closing electric circuits for printing.-The slides 60 may be provided with spurs to close electrical contacts 69 during their sliding movement. Case-shift mechanism ; key sections.-Coded slots 61, 62 are associated with upper and lower case, respectively, and the probe members 50 are biased to probe the slots by leaf springs 15 which are displaced by link 16 under control of a cam 17 which is actuated by a case shift mechanism 12 on depression of a case-shift key 22. Key levers; repeat power action prevention; repeated power action.-The key levers 20 are provided with slots 23 at one end to mount them pivotally on a bracket 31 and with hooks 25 at the other end for engagement with a rod 33 to limit their upward movement. Repeat power action due to protracted key depression is prevented by limiting the downward movement of the key lever 20 by causing a lug 28 to abut a stationary frame 38 and providing the primary dobber 26 with a surface 27 which arrests the restoring movement of the link 40. Repeated power action by certain keys is possible by replacing the lug 28 by a spring 28 1 so that the key lever may be depressed to a greater extent and by providing the key lever 20 with a secondary dobber 29 which engages the upper edge 48 of restored link 40 and keeps it in a depressed position in which the probe member 50 is probing repeatedly its associated coded slot 61, 62. Key touch regulating arrangements.-Key touch is regulated by varying the width of key lever restoring leaf springs 80 which engage lugs 81 on the key levers 20, whereby entire keyboard control is effected by an operator touch control lever 82 articulated to a crank arm 83. Key switches.-Mis-operation of fast sequentially operated links 40 is prevented by a ball interlock mechanism 41 which permits only one link to be inserted at any one time. Release of the links 40 is effected early in the cycle by a bail 42 actuated by a cam 44 as so to permit the insertion of a second link thereinto. The bail 42 carries a number of leaf springs 43, one for each link, which engage the respective link and move it out of the ball interlock a restoring spring 46 urging the link 40 upwardly into its starting position. Variable impression arrangements.-Stack of slides 60 is associated with a further slide 76 coupled to a cable 75 which is attached to a slidable yoke to displace a roller 74, mounted in a cradle 71, into contact with one of a number of cams 73 which effect angular displacement of the cradle articulated to the spherical type head 72.
