    Abstract: An erase ribbon feed mechanism incrementally feeds ribbon both before and after, but not during print impact to break an adhesive type erase ribbon loose from adjacent structures such as a card holder to which it may have become attached. The mechanism is thus made suitable for feeding an adhesive erase ribbon without creating shedding conditions that would make it unsuitable for feeding a cover-up type erase ribbon. Preferably, the card holder is made of polytetraflouroethylene and includes surface contact minimizing ridges adjacent the path of the erase ribbon. Where the ribbon lift action increases the span length of the erase ribbon, the feed occurring after impact is designed to take-up ribbon at a rate at least as great as the rate of decrease in ribbon span length to prevent accumulation of slack in the ribbon span.

    Abstract: A mechanism is disclosed for the automatic erasing of typing errors utilizing a fully serialized and automated correction apparatus where the correction is accomplished by a single backspace operation allowing both the erasure of the erroneously typed letter and the typing of the proper letter. The backspace operation repositions the typewriter carriage for the correction of the erroneous letter and at the same time inhibits the escapement of the carriage for a single print cycle allowing the corrected letter to be printed over the correction without requiring an additional backspace operation. The escapement mechanism is re-engaged during the correction cycle so that the carriage advances of the print cycle.

    Abstract: An adhesive erasing ribbon employed in a typewriter is reliably tracked and fed by a supply and takeup mechanism that positively maintains resilient tension on the ribbon. A spring device acting against a cam in the form of a multi-toothed ratchet, positively maintains continuous tension on the ribbon regardless of any tendency caused by vibrations and continued stress for the ribbon to loosen during extended periods of non-feeding operation. The tension maintaining mechanism and the ribbon supply spool are mounted on a tilting platform to minimize the exposed length of adhesive ribbon and thereby minimize its deterioration.
