Abstract:
A method and system/apparatus implementing a non-model based Decentralized Feedforward Adaptive Algorithm (DFAA) for active vibration control of an actively-driven element, such as an Active Vibration Absorber (AVA) (24). The AVA (24) preferably includes an inertial tuning mass (42) and a voice coil assembly (46) and is contained in an active vibration control system (20) wherein the method and system/apparatus reduce vibration of a vibrating member (22) at an attachment point (26) by receiving an error signal from an error sensor (28) such as an accelerometer and a reference signal from a tachometer (32) or accelerometer (34), where the reference signal is correlated to, or indicative of the frequency content of, a primary vibration source (36) and calculating an updated output signal via an electronic controller (39) using the non-model based DFAA to dynamically drive the actively-driven element, such as AVA (24). The method and system/apparatus using DFAA is effective for reduction of both tonal and broadband vibration. The method approaches the performance of Filtered-x LMS control, yet is decentralized and does not require information regarding the plant.
Abstract:
A pneumatic tool (10) is disclosed which includes vibration mounts (32) to reduce the amount of vibration transferred to the user. The vibration mounts (32) include a pair of support members (60) and at least one resilient vibration isolator (32) connecting the support member (60) spaced relationship. A compressed air conduit (54) passes through the support member openings but is only directly fastened to one of the support members (58) and (60).
Abstract:
An aqueous composition for coating a metallic substrate that is prepared by mixing at least one silane (preferably at least two silanes), at least about 20 weight percent phosphoric acid based on the total weight of the composition, and water, wherein the composition is substantially free of an organic solvent and a chromium-containing compound. The pH of the composition must not be above 3. The composition can be coated on a metallic substrate, particularly an aluminum substrate, to provide a pre-treatment layer for adhering overcoats.
Abstract:
An isolation system (20) including the combination of an elastomeric mount (25) for attachment between a structure (24) and a vibrating member (22) and further including at least one passive tuned vibration absorber (TVA) (32) attached in the proximity of the elastomeric mount (25) but on the structure side thereof. The resonant frequency fr of the passive TVA (32) is tuned to a resonant frequency fr just below the predominant operating frequency fo of the vibrating member (22), such that the resonance of the tuned vibration absorber (32) makes the structure (24) appear dynamically stiffer. In particular, the ratio of fr/fo is in the range of between about 0.90 and 0.99. In one embodiment, the passive TVA (32) attaches directly to the inner member (28) of the elastomeric mount (25) and clamps the TVA assembly (43) to the structure (24) and clamps the structure (24) to the elastomeric mount (25). In another embodiment, the passive TVA (32) is clamped to the structure (24) at a point where it cooperates with the elastomeric mount (25) to reduce transmitted vibration, preferably the TVA (32) is attached at a point within last 20 % of the end of the beam-like structure (24).

Abstract:
An active noise and vibration cancellation system with broadband control capability. A broadband disturbance signal detector (42, 42a) positioned within a closed compartment (41) such as an aircraft cabin or vehicle passenger compartment provides a signal representative of the frequency spectrum and corresponding relative magnitude of a broadband signal emanating from a vibration energy source to a controller. The controller (46) receives the broadband disturbance signal (44) as well as error signals from error sensors (52) which, by virtue of adaptive filters within the controller, enhance the cancellation capability of the control signals produced by one or more actuators (50) positioned within the compartment.
Abstract:
A flexibly-mounted active vibration absorber (AVA) which has a secondary controllable mass M3. If the passive resonance of mass M2 of the tuned absorber is insufficient to control the input vibration, a secondary mass M3 is vibrated at a frequency, amplitude and phase sufficient to make up the deficiency in mass M2. Many embodiments are described which depict variations on the first spring used for flexibly mounting the AVA, the actuators used to drive the AVA, and the attachment features for attaching to a vibrating member. Further, in another aspect, means for counterbalancing the moments produced by the AVA are described.
Abstract:
Adhesive compositions based on chlorinated polyolefins having chlorine contents greater than about 60 percent and molecular weights greater than about 500. The adhesive compositions contain the chlorinated polyolefin and a phenolic resin. The chlorinated polyolefins are advantageous in that they can be prepared in an environmentally acceptable manner and can be utilized as a substitute for the traditional chlorinated natural rubber materials utilized in adhesive compositions without compromising adhesive performance. Preferred chlorinated polyolefins are prepared by a process involving the dispersion and chlorination of high surface area polyolefinic particles in an aqueous medium.
Abstract:
An adhesive composition containing a polyvinyl alcohol-stabilized butadiene polymer latex and a methylene donor compound. The butadiene polymer latex is prepared by an emulsion polymerization in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol. The adhesive composition may also contain other optional ingredients such as a supplemental polymeric film-forming component, a nitroso compound crosslinker, a maleimide compound crosslinker, a vulcanizing agent, and an acid-scavenging compound. The polyvinyl alcohol-stabilized butadiene polymer latex and methylene donor compound combine to provide a tightly crosslinked, robust film which provides for excellent adhesion and environmental resistance.

An electrorheological material containing a particle component and a carrier fluid. The carrier fluid has a dielectric constant between about 3.0 and 7.5 and an observed conductivity less than about 1.00 x 10 S/m. The carrier fluid can be a silicone copolymer, a hindered ester compound or a cyanoalkylsiloxane homopolymer. The electrorheological materials exhibit substantial electroactivity over a broad temperature range.
