Abstract: A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

Abstract: This invention relates to a low-sulfur consumable lubricating oil composition, comprising: a base oil; an acylated nitrogen-containing compound having a substituent of at least about 10 aliphatic carbon atoms; and a sulfur content of about 5 to about 250 ppm; said composition being characterized by the absence of an extreme-pressure additive comprised of metal and phosphorus. This invention further relates to a a method of operating an internal combustion engine equipped with an exhaust gas aftertreatment device, said method comprising: (A) operating said engine using a normally liquid or gaseous fuel; (B) lubricating said engine using the foregoing low-sulfur consumable lubricating oil composition; (C) removing part of said low-sulfur consumable lubricating oil composition from said engine, said removed part of said low-sulfur consumable lubricating oil composition (i) being combined with said fuel and consumed with said fuel as said engine is operated or (ii) being combined with the exhaust gas from said engine and removed from said engine with said exhaust gas; and (D) adding an additional amount of said low-sulfur consumable lubricating oil composition to said engine to replace said removed part of said low-sulfur consumable lubricating oil composition.

Abstract: Lubricant compositions are disclosed which comprise (A) at least one neutral or basic metal salt of at least one acidic organic compound, wherein the metal in the salt is magnesium, barium or a mixture thereof, and (B) optionally at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted ashless dispersant in which each hydrocarbyl substituent has a number average molecular weight up to about 1500, provided that the compositions contain no more than 0.06 weight percent calcium, not more than 0.5 weight-percent hydrocarbyl-substituted ashless dispersant in which a hydrocarbyl substituent has a number average molecular weight greater than about 1,500, and optionally not more than 0.5 weight-percent of polymeria viscosity improvers such as olefin copolymer, styrene-diene, and/or polymethacrylate viscosity improvers. Additive concentrate formulations for making such lubricant formulations are also disclosed. Methods for lubricating sump-lubricated fuel-injected alcohol-powered internal combustion engines are described which utilize these lubricant compositions to help prevent the formation of deposits in fuel injectors and provide advantageous rust and corrosion inhibition properties. These formulations can also be useful for lubricating combustion engines powered by petroleum- and coal-derived fuels.

Abstract: This invention relates to a lubricant composition for two-cycle engines comprising: a major amount of at least one oil of lubricating viscosity which is free of oils having a viscosity greater than or equal to 100 cSt at 40 DEG C, an amount sufficient to reduce or prevent piston scuffing of a mixture of (A) at least one phenol selected from (A-1) an aminophenol and (A-2) a reaction product of a nitrophenol and an amino compound, and (B) at least one ashless dispersant. The compositions may also include up to about 10 % by weight of (C) at least one polyalkene having a number average molecular weight from about 500 to about 2500. Since lubricant compositions for two-cycle engines are often mixed with fuels before or during combustion, Applicants' invention also includes fuel-lubricant mixtures. Applicants have discovered that the above compositions of the present invention act to control piston scuffing while also contributing to piston lubrication, deposit control, ring stick protection, reduced exhaust port blockage and reduced visible smoke emission. In another embodiment of the invention, the lubricant compositions are free of isostearic acid, or derivatives thereof.
