Abstract: A wireless communication device (20) provides a matching state between a radio circuit (28) and an antenna assembly (26) in both its retracted and extended positions, and does so with an elegant design that increases reliability and manufacturability by reducing the number and complexity of components and moving mechanical parts. A matching circuit (30), which is reconfigured according to a switch (32) that is responsive to the antenna's position, provides the matching states. Furthermore, the switch (32) can be integrally formed as part of a feed terminal (36), the feed terminal (36) and a ground terminal (38) can hold the antenna in position, and the ground terminal (38) can hold a guiding tube (52). Alternatively, the switch (32) can include a diode (102) and a sensor. The sensor is a rod (46) of the antenna assembly that makes and breaks an electrical path between the feed terminal and the ground terminal to change the state of the diode.

Abstract: A switching circuit (30) in a portable telephone connects a gate of a field-effect transistor (Q1) to a voltage below the transistor's gate threshold voltage when the voltage at a first power source terminal (B) falls below a threshold voltage, thus disconnecting the first power source terminal (B) from a portable telephone power input terminal (B+) and connecting a second power source terminal (A) to the power input terminal (B+). The threshold voltage is set at a voltage above the minimum supply voltage of the portable telephone. The first power source terminal may be connected to a main battery and the second power source terminal may be connected to an adapter such as a battery eliminator adapter, hands-free adapter, or mobile transceiver adapter. This switching circuit prevents a call in progress from being disconnected when power sources are exchanged during a GSM burst.

The MOSFET transistors are easy to package as surface mount devices. The output power of the amplifier is controlled by controlling the bias current flowing through the amplifier stage. Additionally, the amplifier has low sensitivity to the variations of the bias current to the control signal threshold. These characteristics make the amplifier ideal for use in a radio transmitter, such as a radiotelephone.

The level shifter (228) is coupled to the second input (206) and the gate (238/240) and, responsive to the control signal, supplies a biasing voltage (VGG) to the gate (238/240). The level shifter (228) includes circuitry (255) to minimize temperature sensitivity of the biasing voltage (VGG).

Abstract: A power amplifier controller for detecting saturation of the power amplifier (203) and correcting the automatic output control voltage (231) to avoid any further saturation. The controller detects the power of the RF output signal (211). Generates a signal (229) correlated to the detected power. Compares changes in that signal (229) to changes in the voltage of the AOC signal (231) in a comparator (217). The comparator (217) generates a signal (233) correlated to saturation of the power amplifier (203) for a DSP (223). The DSP checks the status of this signal (233). Upon detecting saturation, a algorithm contained within the DSP methodically reduces the voltage of the AOC signal (231) until there is a change in the power of the RF output signal (211).

Abstract: A frequency synthesizer employs a frequency divider (103) and a frequency multiplier (403) in the feedback loop. The minimum frequency separation between two adjacent synthesized channels is equal to the reference frequency divided by the multiplication ratio of the multiplier. The division ratio of the frequency divider (103), which can be analyzed as the sum of an integer and a fractional portion, is varied with time by a digital sequence, resulting in a minimum frequency increment equal to a fraction of the reference frequency. The multiplier (403) acts to reduce the nonlinearities of the frequency synthesizer when the fractional portion of the division ratio causes a large variation in the instantaneous division ratio by reducing the effective division ratio of the loop.
