Abstract: A microcomputer (104) having predetermined clock pulse frequency requirements receives pulses from a multiplying type frequency synthesizer (200) which utilizes a reference frequency less than the largest of the predetermined requirements. The synthesizer (200) is responsive to program instructions to generate clock pulse frequencies sufficient to satisfy the requirement for immediate execution of programmed tasks. As the execution requirements change, the synthesizer (200) responds to provide only the frequency required. Thus, the power dissipated by the entire microcomputer system is minimized.

Abstract: A radio paging apparatus (100) with an LPC speech synthesizer (112). The paging apparatus of the present invention includes a controller and decoder (106), and a microprocessor controlled speech synthesizer (112) both coupled to a dual port memory (110). Digitally encoded voice messages are stored in a dual port memory (110) which includes a scratch pad area for storing control words and address pointers which indicate the attributes and location of stored digitally encoded voice messages. Messages are reconstructed by reading the control words and address pointers and processing the information stored in memory (110) with a speech synthesizer (112). The structure is adapted to store and process LPC encoded signals and it permits a message to be stored while another is being reproduced. In addition, information contained in the control words permits old or read messages to be discarded if a new message must be stored.

Abstract: A combination radio paging receiver and radio telephone (40) includes a receiver (214) for receiving paging signals provided from a paging terminal (32), a decoder (216) for decoding the paging sgnals to recover a page, and a controller (220) for determining whether the page requests an acknowledge back signal. A radio telephone section (205) couples the controller (220) to a radio telephone system (15) to form a radio telephone link with the paging terminal (32) for communicating the acknowledge back signal to the paging terminal (32) via the radio telephone link in response to determining that the page requests the acknowledge back signal (304).

Abstract: An apparatus for determining if a received binary word corresponds to the true or complement version of a stored binary word includes means for serially multiplexing the bits of each binary word to the inputs of an exclusive OR gate. The exclusive OR gate generates a logical high signal each time a mismatch occurs. These signals are applied directly to an error counter and, after inversion, to a match counter. The contents of the error counter and match counter are compared to a stored threshold number. A first signal is generated if the contents of the error counter exceeds the threshold. A second signal is generated if the contents of the match counter exceeds the threshold. Upon the occurrence of both signals, the serial comparison process is terminated.

Abstract: An automatic telephone answering device employing an Automatic Number Identification (ANI) decoder to selectively perform operations on a telephone call is described. The device may perform such operations as to selectively not respond, end, record or forward a telephone call wherein the selection is dependent upon the ANI signal associated with the telephone call, and the operations are determined prior to the reception of the telephone call. In using the automatic answering device in a paging system, a method of selectively forwarding a telephone message to a paging device and ultimately to a pager is described, wherein the selection is dependent upon the ANI signal associated with the telephone call. Additionally, a way to selectively distribute message storage between a telephone answering machine and a pager is described.
