    Abstract: A message receiving apparatus is described including a portable communications receiver (16), intended to be carried by the user, which receives, detects and stores messages transmitted on a first radio frequency communication channel (14). The stored message is then subsequently transmitted over a presentation unit having a second communications channel (20) to a second receiver (22) which is intended to be carried by the user. The second receiver (22) receives, and detects the message, and presents the message to the user in the form of a visual display. The message may also be stored. A system transmitting synchronization signals and coded message signals is also described. In particular, coded synchronization signals are used to indicate the transmission of coded message signals or the absence of transmission of coded message signals following the transmission of the coded synchronization signal, thereby providing a battery saving function for a personal communications receiver.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus adaptively selects a communication strategy for communicating a message in a selective call radio communication system including a fixed portion (100) and a portable portion (101). The fixed portion (100) transmits (402) an alert signal to the portable portion (101), and awaits (404) an acknowledgment signal including a signal quality estimate from the portable portion (101). The portable portion (101) receives (602) the alert signal, and computes (604, 606) the signal quality estimate therefrom. The portable portion (101) then sends (608) the acknowledgment signal to the fixed portion (100). In response to the acknowledgment signal, the fixed portion (100) selects (407) a transmission strategy in accordance with the signal quality estimate. For compatibility, the transmission strategy requires a matching reception strategy in the portable portion (101). After sending the acknowledgment signal, the portable portion (101) selects (609) the matching reception strategy in accordance with the signal quality estimate sent in the acknowledgment signal without requiring further communication with the fixed portion (100).

    Abstract: A wrist worn device includes a digital watch circuit and a receiver circuit which responds to coded message signals including selective call signalling and message information. An input steering circuit interfaces between the watch circuit and the receiver circuit for normally providing control of the watch circuit by switches located in the device case. The normal watch functions of the switches are permanently marked on the device case. The watch circuit and the receiver circuit couple to an information selector circuit which normally selects the watch output for a common display. When coded message signals are received, the switches are enabled to control the receiver circuit, and the received message information is selected for display. New indicia, electronically selected by the information selector circuit, are displayed on the display defining the new functions of the switches.
