Abstract: An apparatus, such as a network element ( 112 ), for use in a system that communicates with a multimode receiving device ( 110 ), employs an information gating buffer ( 400 ) that is operably coupled to a first wireless system transmitter ( 404 ) and receives information to be transmitted by the first wireless system transmitter ( 404 ). A synchronization controller ( 402 ), operably coupled to the information gating buffer ( 400 ) receives synchronization information ( 132 ) from a second wireless system using a second wireless system receiver circuit ( 130 ), and uses the timing synchronization information ( 132 ) to control the information gating buffer ( 400 ) to gate broadcast information for transmission from a first wireless system transmission circuit ( 128 ) to the multimode receiving device ( 110 ). A method includes receiving ( 200 ) timing synchronization information from the first wireless system, and using ( 204 ) the timing synchronization information to gate the transmission of information transmitted from the second wireless system to the multimode receiving device.

Abstract: A method of managing capabilities in a telecommunications network comprises the steps of (i) receiving a request for an unspecified service having an associated set of service capabilities; (ii) determining whether at least one constraint to providing the unspecified service with the associated set of service capabilities exists, and (iii) establishing the selected service by dynamically providing the associated set of capabilities in response to the at least one constraint not existing.

Abstract: In a digital broadcast service such as satellite television, an information circuit is formed comprising a broadcast service provider 234, a set-top box 200, and a wireless device such as a mobile phone 106. Each device in the circuit is authenticated to the other devices in the circuit before access to a requested service is allowed. Each device creates and manages a service record corresponding to the requested service and a partner identity record corresponding to each other device in the circuit. The set-top box authenticates a subscriber's smart card, the service provider authenticates the set-top box and the cellular communication network authenticates the mobile phone. Authentication information is passed around the circuit to all the devices and access to the requested service is granted when the authentication status of all devices is known and the circuit is complete.

Abstract: A method for utilising resources of a CDMA telecommunications system comprising a plurality of base stations B10 and one or more mobile terminals MT10 comprises causing the base stations to indicate, to the one or more terminals, whether they have unused capacity and causing one or more of the mobile terminals to change or maintain constant its data rate or power output dependent upon the unused capacity indication received from the base stations. A contention resolution phase may be used so that only sufficient terminals increase their data rate to accommodate the unused capacity. The system may be arranged so that the one or more mobile terminal only increases its data rate or power output if all base stations with which the mobile is in communication have sufficient capacity to accommodate such an increase.
