Abstract: To provide an apparatus for pre-selecting fingerprint cards having certain similarity to an S-card to be identified, at a high-speed, among a plurality of F-cards, an apparatus of the invention comprises: an F-side cluster index determination section (2) for designating a cluster wherein feature data of the plurality of F-cards are to be classified according to features extracted from the plurality of F-cards; an F-card feature storing section (3) for storing the feature data of the plurality of F-cards in the cluster designated by the F-side cluster index determination section (2); an S-card feature storing section (5) for temporarily storing feature data of the S-card; an S-side cluster index determination section (6) for designating clusters to be retrieved according to a combination of features extracted from the S-card; and a fingerprint card matching discrimination unit (8) for pre-selecting the fingerprint cards by comparing the feature data of the S-card with the feature data of the plurality of F-cards stored the clusters designated by the S-side cluster determination section (6).

Abstract: A biometric identification system ensuring reliable and protective identification of individuals even in a system having a biometric input device and a biometric verifier are separately provided is disclosed. The biometric data input device has a biometric data sensor and an encoder that encodes digital biometric data using secret information identifying the biometric data input device to transmit encoded data to the biometric verifier. The biometric verifier decodes the encoded data using the secret information to reproduce digital biometric data. The identity of the individual is verified when the digital biometric data is a registered biometric feature of an authorized user and the biometric data input device is an authorized device.

Abstract: A user authentication apparatus is disclosed by which, even where biometrics input data of some user such as a fingerprint are low in quality and are not suitable for verification, the security of the entire system can be augmented without giving rise to increase of the cost by introduction of significant additional hardware. When a fingerprint verifying characteristic extraction section discriminates that the quality of an image of a fingerprint is insufficient or when authentication based on an inputted fingerprint by a user verification result determination section results in failure, a request to input a fingerprint is issued from a fingerprint inputting request section to the user. When necessary fingerprint inputting is performed from a fingerprint inputting section, substitute authentication by a substitute authentication section is permitted. A result of the substitute authentication by the substitute authentication section is displayed on a service permission or rejection display section. The image inputted from a fingerprint inputting section or the fingerprint inputting section is stored into a substitute authentication means user information storage section.

Abstract: A fingerprint characteristic extraction apparatus uses, in addition to characteristic amounts used in ordinary preselection processing, a novel characteristic amount obtained from a fingerprint image for the preselection processing. The fingerprint characteristic extraction apparatus further includes a joint line extraction section (11) for extracting a joint line from the inputted fingerprint image, and a joint line characteristic calculation section (16) for calculating joint line singular point characteristic amounts from the joint lines, the ridges and the singular points.

Abstract: An original image is held in the image holder 11, and displayed on the image display 12 to be viewed by the operator. The operator inputs the angle of rotation and ratio of compression of an focal point of the original image for observing ridges more clearly. A perspective transforming unit 14 generates a result image according to corresponding perspective transformation (i.e., affine transformations), and a perspective transformed image display 15 displays the result image to the user. The operator does operations of manual plotting and manual tracing with reference to the result image. The result of the operations is inputted to and recorded in the manual input unit 16, and transformed in a feature data transforming unit 17 to feature data.
