The composition which may contain 0À2-10% by weight of the active compound may be an aqueous alcoholic solution or may be in the form of a cream, gel, emulsion or aerosol foam, and may also contain other adjuvants used in cosmetics, e.g. dyes, surface-active agents or swelling agents such as paraffin oil and the reaction product of 1 mole of oleyl alcohol with 10 moles of ethylene oxide.

In Example 6 a gel comprises paraffin oil, the reaction product of 1 mole of oleyl alcohol with 10 moles of ethylene oxide, monomethylol dicyandiamide, perfume and water.

[Also in Divisions C4 and D1] A composition used in the treatment of hair comprises at least one methylolated compound having the formula in which E represents a radical, R 1 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl or hydroxymethyl radical, or a radical terminated by a radical of the formula in which R 111 is an alkoxy radical, R 11 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy radical, or when E is a a radical, an amino group, or an acid addition salt thereof, or when E is an -SO 2 - radical, an aryl or aralkyl radical, or R 1 and R 11 together with the adjacent nitrogen atom and-E- group form a heterocyclic ring containing an additional nitrogen atom, and a perfume. Suitable compounds are monomethylol ethyl carbamate, dimethylol ethyl methylene-bis-carbamate, dimethylol succinamide or adipamide, guanidine monomethylol guanidine carbonate, N-methylol para-toluene-sulphonamide, N,N 1 - dimethylol (2-methyl-2-propyl) propylene biscarbamate, monomethylol dimethyl hydantoin, monomethylol ethyleneurea, monomethylol ethylene thiourea or dimethylol ethylene thiourea. The composition which may contain 0.1-10% by weight of the methylolated compounds, may be in the form of an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic solution and may be packed in the form of a jelly, cream or aerosol. At least one acid catalyst, e.g. monosodium phosphate, phosphoric acid, lactic acid, Citric acid, sulphuric acid, or acetic acid, may be added to the composition. The composition may also contain a dyestuff, surface active agent, foaming agent or resin, e.g. a polyvinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer, oleic acid or oleyl alcohol oxyethylenated with 10 mols. of ethylene oxide per mol. of acid or alcohol, paraffin oil, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide or a compound having the formula in which R represents alkyl radicals, predominantly of 12-14 carbon atoms, derived from the fatty acids of copra. The composition may be added to a permanent hair waving composition containing thioglycollic acid and monoethanolamine.

A composition suitable for dying animal fibres e.g. dead or live hair at below 50‹C comprises a solution of one or more direct dyes (as defined) dissolved in an homogenous mixture of water and a diol of formula I in which R is a straight or branched chain alkyl radical of 3-8 carbon atoms, a phenyl, benzyl or cyclohexyl radical and n is an integer from 1-4 preferably 1-15% by weight of diol is present and diols specified are 3- amyloxy-1, 2-propanediol, 3-benzyloxy-1, 2- propanediol, and 3-phenoxy-1. 2-propanediol, other organic solvents may also be present. Direct dyes are defined as any colouring substance which is capable of being directly fixed in the fibre in its final shade without the necessity of effecting any chemical transformation, thus nitro, disperse, basic acid dyes and pigments containing solvents are included.

    Abstract: A composition for dyeing human hair comprises an oxidation dye and a 5-pyrazolone as oxidation retarder. The preferred pyrazolone is 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone which may be used in a proportion of 1-50 mols per 100 mols oxidation dye base. The compositions may also contain as preservatives ammonium thioglycollate, sodium sulphite or ascorbic acid, as well as other known additives. The compositions may be mixed with hydrogen peroxide prior to application. Examples are given.
