    Abstract: Hair is permanently waved or straightened by subjecting the hair constrained in a deformed state to the action of a composition containing at least one thiol and at least one disulphide of a thiol, the molar ratio of disulphide to thiol being at least 1:1 allowing the composition to act on the hair for at most 30 minutes to impart a permanent deformation thereto and then removing the composition and the constraining means. The composition may be allowed to act on the hair for up to 30 minutes before the hair is rinsed and the constraining means removed. Alternatively the composition may first be removed from the hair by rinsing while it is still mechanically deformed, e.g. wound on curlers, and a period of 5-30 minutes allowed to elapse before the curlers are removed and the final rinsing effected. Specified thiols are thioglycolic acid, thioglycerol, glycol thioglycolate, glycol thiolactate, b -mercapto ethanol, N-carboxymethylmercapto acetamide, thiolactic acid, b mercaptopropionic acid and glycerol thioglycolate and suitable disulphides are those of these thiols. The composition may contain 0.2-0.8 moles per litre of thiol and the molar ratio of disulphide to thiol is preferably from 1.5:1 to 5:1. The composition may also contain swelling agents, e.g. urea, perfumes and conditioning agents and may be adjusted to a pH of 8:5-9.5 by the addition of ammonia. In the straightening of hair the composition may be in the form of a cream which may also contain monoethanol amine stearate and the hair combed during contact with the composition. The hair may subsequently be treated with a composition comprising cationic surface active agents e.g. trimethyl ammonium cetyl bromide and natural or synthetic resins, e.g. polyvinylpyrrolidone and lactic acid. A solution of the thiol-and a solution of the disulphide may be packaged separately and mixed together prior to use.
