[[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] A setting lotion suitable for application to hair comprises a solution, e.g. alcoholic, a coloured polymer consisting solely of repeating units of formula (a) or solely of formula (a) and of formula (b) where R is H, CH 3 or C 2 H 5 , Q is a tetravalent hydrocarbon radical derived from a polymer of an ethylenically unsaturated anhydride, consisting of repeating units of formula where D is a mono-cyclic or poly cyclic amino dye nucleus, A is the residue of a monohydric alcohol of formula A.OH and p is 0 or 2-6. In the examples the polymers were made by condensing (1) poly(maleic anhydride) with n-butyl alcohol and a dye of formula (2) poly(itaconic anhydride) with n-ibutyl alcohol and a dye of formula (3) poly(acrylic anhydride) with n-butyl alcohol and a dye of formula (4) poly(methacrylic anhydride) with n-butyl alcohol and a dye of formula and (5) poly(acrylic/methacrylic anhydride), with n-butyl alcohol and the dye (IV). These polymers are compounded in the examples (A to C) with Z-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, ethyl alcohol, water and a methyl vinyl ether/butyl monomaleate copolymer to form hair setting lotions.

[Also in Divisions B1 and B2] A cosmetic composition free from water comprises a solution in an oil of one or more emulsifiers of general formula where R is a saturated aliphatic C 12 to C 30 radical, R 1 is methyl or ethyl, m is 1 to 10 and n is 1 to 5, and a coupling agent which may be (a) magnesium isostearate, (b) a copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a liphophilic chain and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing a dicarboxylic acid anhydride group, (c) a copolymer obtained by hydrolysing (b), (d) a magnesium salt of (c), (e) diethylene glycol isostearate or a polyethylene glycol isostearate. Another cosmetic composition or a pharmaceutical excipient contains a water in oil emulsion comprising the emulsifier and coupling agent as above. The emulsion may contain 20% to 70% water. Preferred cosmetic compositions are limpid solutions containing a mixture of an oil, a C 2 to C 3 alcohol, an emulsifier and a copolymer as above, and water. Examples of pharmaceutical compositions comprise triamcinolone and a mixture of dichlorophene and hexachlorophene respectively.

    Abstract: A polymer has a recurring structural unit of formula in which R1 and R11 are -H, a C1- 4 alkyl or alkoxy radical or a phenyl radical, R111 is -H, -OCOCH3, -COOCH3 or -CN, Y is Q or Q1, where is where R1 is -H or -CH3, R2 is -H or -COOH, q is 1-5, q1 and p are 0 or 1 and Q1 is where R3 is -H, or a C1- 4 alkyl radical, R4 is R3 or where the r's are a C1- 4 alkyl radical or, together with the N-atom to which they are attached, form a heterocyclic ring, and m is 2-4; the polymer containing both Q and Q1. The polymer may be produced by condensing an amino-thiol and an alkylamine with a copolymer having the repeating unit where the symbols in the formulae are as above. In examples, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, ethylene or styrene-maleic an hydrid copolymer was condensed with b -mercapto ethylamine, cysteine or N - (b - aminoethyl) thioglycolamide and N,N - diethylpropylene diamine, n-butyl-amine or N-(b -aminoethyl) morpholine. The polymers may be compounded with (A) a vinyl pyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymer, water, ethyl alcohol, the tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetracetic acid and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, triethanolamine or N,N-dimethyl ethanolamine, or (B) a cetyl-stearyl alcohol/ethylene oxide condensate and an aerosol propellant, e.g. a fluorinated hydrocarbon.ALSO:Human hair is set and the receptivity of textile keratinic fibres towards reactive dyes is improved by treatment with a polymer having the repeating unit where R1 and R11 are -H, a C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy radical or a phenyl radical, R111 is -H, -OCOCH3, -COOCH3 or -CN, Y is Q or Q1 where Q is where R1 is -H or -CH3, R2 is -H or -COOH, q is 1-5, q1 and p are 0 or 1 and Q1 is where R3 is -H or a C1-4 alkyl radical, R4 is R3 or where the r's are a C1-4 alkyl radical 2 or 1 together with the N-atom to which they are attached, form a heaterocyclic ring, and m is 2-4; the polymer containing both Q and Q1. In examples the polymer resulting from the condensation of b -mercaptoethylamine or N-(b -aminoethyl)thioglycolamide and N,N-diethylpropylenediamine or butylamine with an ethylene vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate or acrylonitrile and maleic anhydride copolymer was compounded with water ethanol, the tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetracetic acid and 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, triethanolamine or N,N-dimethyl ethanolamine to form a setting lotion for human hair and with a cetyl-stearyl alcohol/ethylene oxide condensate and a fluorinated hydrocarbon to form an aerosol foam for hair.ALSO:A setting lotion or aerosol foam for human hair contains a polymer having a recurring structural unit of formula (I) in which R1 and R11 are -H, a C1-4 alkyl or alkoxy radical or a phenyl radical R111 is -H, -OCOCH3, -COOCH3 or -CN, Y is Q or Q1 where Q is (II) where R1 is -H or -CH3, R2 is -H or -COOH, q is 1-5, q and p are 0 or 1 and Q1 is (III) where R3 is -H, or a C1-4 alkyl radical, R4 is R3 or where the r's are a C1-4 alkyl radical or, together with the N-atom to which they are attached, form a heterocyclic ring, and m is 2-4; the polymer containing both Q and Q1.     Abstract: 1,134,344. Maleamic acids. L'OREAL. 10 May, 1966 [15 June, 1965], No. 20731/66. Heading C2C. Maleamic acid derivatives of the formula wherein n is an integer from 2-5 and each of R 1 and R 2 represents a C 1-4 alkyl group or R 1 and R 2 together form a saturated heterocyclic ring with the N atom, are prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with an amine of the formula in the presence of a non-aromatic polar solvent to obtain the maleamic acid derivative either in solution or as a crystalline precipitate, provided that when the solvent is water or an alkanol the reaction is effected at below 30‹ C. Specified solvents are water, methanol, ethanol, tbutanol and ethyl acetate; a crystalline product is obtained in the two latter solvents. Examples relate to the preparation of N- (N 1 ,N 1 - diethylaminopropyl)maleamic acid, N - (morpholinobutyl) - maleamic acid, N- (N 1 ,N 1 - diethylaminopentyl) - maleamio acid and N - (piperidinopropyl) - maleamic acid.
