Maleamic acid derivatives of the formula wherein n is an integer from 2-5 and each of R 1 and R 2 represents a C 1-4 alkyl group or R 1 and R 2 together form a saturated heterocyclic ring with the N atom, are prepared by reacting maleic anhydride with an amine of the formula in the presence of a non-aromatic polar solvent to obtain the maleamic acid derivative either in solution or as a crystalline precipitate, provided that when the solvent is water or an alkanol the reaction is effected at below 30‹ C. Specified solvents are water, methanol, ethanol, tbutanol and ethyl acetate; a crystalline product is obtained in the two latter solvents. Examples relate to the preparation of N- (N 1 ,N 1 - diethylaminopropyl)maleamic acid, N - (morpholinobutyl) - maleamic acid, N- (N 1 ,N 1 - diethylaminopentyl) - maleamio acid and N - (piperidinopropyl) - maleamic acid.
