Abstract:
A device and related method are provided for lyophiliziπg a substance within the device and storing the lyophilized substance. The device is penetrable by a needle for filling the device with the substance to be lyophilized, and a resulting needle hole in the device is laser resealable by transmitting thereon laser radiation from a laser source. The device defines a chamber for receiving therein the substance to be lyophilized. A needle penetrable and laser resealable portion of the device is pierceable with a needle to form a needle aperture therethrough to fill the chamber with the substance to be lyophilized through the needle, and is laser resealable to hermetically seal the needle aperture by applying laser radiation thereto.
Abstract:

The container closure includes a member forming a substantially fluid-tight seal between the container closure and the body; a nipple in fluid communication with the chamber that seals the chamber with respect to the ambient atmosphere during storage of the product in the chamber and that can be opened to dispense product from the chamber therethrough; and a needle penetrable and laser resealable portion that is penetrable by the needle for aseptically filling the chamber with the product, and that is thermally resealable by the application of laser radiation thereto to seal the product within the chamber.
Abstract:
A dispenser has a housing, and a variable-volume storage chamber formed within the housing and defining a substantially fluid-tight seal between the chamber and exterior of the housing for storing a substance to be dispensed. A piston is mounted within the housing, and a one-way valve is mounted within the housing and coupled in fluid communication with the variable-volume storage chamber. A compression chamber is coupled in fluid communication between the piston and one-way valve, and at least one of the piston and valve is manually depressible relative to the other between (i) a first position in which the piston is located at least partially outside of the compression chamber for permitting substance to flow from the variable-volume storage chamber into the compression chamber, and (ii) a second position in which the piston is located at least partially within the compression chamber for pressurizing substance within the compression chamber aboye a valve opening pressuring and, in turn, dispensing substance through the one-way valve and out of the dispenser.
Abstract:
A vial has a body defining a chamber for receiving a substance therein; and a valve assembly coupled in fluid communication with the chamber and defining (i) an open position permitting at least one of (a) passage of the substance through the valve assembly and into the chamber for storing the substance in the chamber, and (b) passage of the substance out of the chamber for dispensing the substance therefrom; and (ii) a closed position forming a fluid-tight seal between the chamber and exterior of the container. A filling member engages a flexible valve member of the valve assembly to move the valve member between the closed and open positions to fill and seal the vial, respectively. A syringe is connectable to the vial. The valve assembly opens upon connecting the syringe to the vial to allow the substance within the vial to be withdrawn from the vial and into the syringe by actuating a plunger of the syringe, and the valve assembly closes upon disconnecting the vial and syringe to hermetically seal and store the substance remaining in the syringe for later use.
Abstract:
An ophthalmic dispenser has a rigid housing defining a fluid-receiving chamber, a flexible bladder receivable within the fluid-receiving chamber, a pump coupled in fluid communication with the fluid-receiving chamber, and a nozzle having a valve defining an annular, axially extending valve seat, an outlet aperture coupled in fluid communication between the valve seat and the pump, and a flexible valve cover extending about the valve seat and forming an annular, axially-extending interface therebetween. The valve interface is connectable in fluid communication with the outlet aperture, and at least part of the valve cover is movable between (i) a normally closed position with the valve cover engaging the valve seat to close the interface and form a fluid-tight seal therebetween, and (ii) an open position with at least part of the valve cover spaced away from the valve seat in response to pumped fluid flowing through the outlet aperture at a pressure greater than a valve opening pressure to allow the passage of pressurized fluid therebetween. A spring is drivingly connected to the housing and moves at least one of the pump and housing relative to the other to actuate the pump. The rigid housing is mountable within a cartridge which, in turn, is mountable within a dispenser housing including an eyelid depressor and a trigger for simultaneously actuating the eyelid depressor and pump.
Abstract:
A syringe (10) is provided for the delivery of controlled, metered amounts of any of numerous different substances to humans or animals, such as medicaments, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food products, or to deliver materials which may react upon exposure to air, such as glue. The syringe (10) includes a body (12) and a plunger (14). Means (34, 48) are provided in the syringe body (12) and the plunger (14) to effect controlled movement of the plunger (14) into the syringe (10) to permit delivery of a pre-detemined amount of the substance contained in the syringe (10) . A one-way valve (54) is provided at the dispensing tip (16) of the syringe (10) to hermetically seal the portion of the syringe (10) containing the subtance to be dispensed.
Abstract:
A syringe and a reconstitution syringe are provided for the delivery of controlled doses of any of numerous different sterile substances, such as vaccines, medicaments, pharmaceutical preparations, cosmetics, and food products. A plunger of the syringe defines a resealable stopper frictionally and slidably received within a hollow syringe body for dispensing the medicament or other substance through a dispensing tip of the syringe upon movement of the plunger. The resealable stopper defines a heat-sealable portion to allow the stopper to be penetrated by a needle or other filling device to fill the syringe with a medicament or other substance, and in turn allow the hole remaining upon withdrawal of the needle to be heat sealed by transmission of laser energy thereon. The plunger assembly further defines a plurality of cam-like members that each engage and cooperate with a respective helical path of steps formed on the inner wall of the syringe body to provide stepwise movement of the plunger and, in turn, precise metering of the substance dispensed therefrom. A reconstitution syringe defines within a syringe body plural compartments, wherein each compartment stores a respective component of a multi-component medicament or other preparation. An elastomeric plug is coupled to the plunger and connected between the two compartments to prevent intermixing of the components. Upon moving the plunger, the plug is released to thereby place the compartments in fluid communication with each other, and to facilitate intermixing of the components upon shaking the syringe.
Abstract:
A contact lens applicator (10) has an elongated housing (12) defining an interior chamber (34) for storing contact lenses (CL), first and second triggers (16, 18) mounted on the housing (12), a depressor (20) for depressing each eyelid where the roller (20) is drivingly coupled to the triggers (16, 18), a pair of opposing wing-shaped members (26) projecting outwardly from opposite sides of the roller (20) for providing a support surface (28) for facilitating locating the apparatus (10) over the eye, and a pusher (40) assembly slidably mounted within the interior chamber (34) for engaging a contact lens holder (75) and applying a contact lens (CL) thereon to the eye when the triggers (16, 18) are actuated. The contact lens (CL) is stored in a cartridge (36) within the housing (12). The lens holder (75) is movable within the cartridge (36) upon actuating the pusher (40), and includes a predetermined amount of saline or other solution for defining appropriate conditions for storing the contact lens (CL).
Abstract:
Connector assembly including a piercing member having a flow port therein attached to a first piece, with the piercing member slidingly receivable within a second piece, wherein the piercing member and the second pierce are movable relative to each other between a first position where the second pieces closes the flow port and a second position where the flow port is open. The first piece contains a locking mechanism that lockingly engages with a device when connected thereto, preventing subsequent disconnection of first piece and the device. Upon initial connection of the first piece to the device, the second piece is moved from the first position to the second position.
