Abstract:
A method and apparatus (10) is used for molding a polymeric article such as a prosthesis (12) which has a solid polymeric portion (14) and a porous polymeric portion (16) for permitting the ingrowth of living tissue within the pores of the portion (16) to anchor the prosthesis (12) within the tissue. The porous polymeric portion (16) is placed within a die cavity (23) and a liquid polymer is introduced into the die cavity (23) to form the solid polymeric portion (14). The liquid polymer also flows into at least a portion of the pores of the porous polymeric portion (16) and forms an integral solid portion (14) and porous portion (16) upon cooling of the liquid polymer.
Abstract:
A medicament-dispensing system includes a cartridge for housing and actuating an accordion-like vial-dispenser for dispensing a calibrated amount of medicament by means of a single actuation motion which sequentially loads the vial-dispenser and dispenses the loaded medicament. The vial-dispenser has a front bellows portion, a rear bellows portion, an internal piston mechanism, a medicament storage chamber and a dosage cavity. The cartridge has a trigger mechanism which acts in concert with a notched lever and a wedge-shaped arm internally located in the cartridge to sequentially load the dosage cavity with medicament and discharge it. Depression of the trigger mechanism simultaneously extends, by means of the notched lever, the front bellows portion and compresses the rear bellows portion to load the dosage cavity with medicament. Once the notched lever has extended the front bellows portion a predetermined distance, the notched lever is disengaged from the front bellows portion by the wedge-shaped arm extending from the rear wall of the housing, thereby releasing the front and rear bellows portions, along with the internal piston mechanism, to return to original position and force the medicament from the dosage cavity via a nozzle of the vial-dispenser.

Abstract:
A prosthesis (10) for implanting in an eye has a lens member and a double interface member (14) which is coupled to the periphery of the lens member. The double interface member (14) is comprised of a more superficial branch (18) and a deeper branch (16) which project out from the lens member. The double interface member has a plurality of pores for permitting the ingrowth of tissue to anchor the prosthesis to the eye. The double interface member also has an anatomical structure into which eye tissue is inserted, so as to become an immediate anchor to the eye and an immediate barrier to external pathogens.
Abstract:
A pump mechanism for use in a medicament-dispensing system having a vial for holding a volume of medicament, a deformable body portion for providing a spring action to the pump mechanism, and a nozzle portion through which medicament is emitted. The pump mechanism comprises a pump sleeve positioned within the deformable body portion. The sleeve has a dosage cavity of pre-determined volume for collecting medicament from the vial and is connected to the nozzle portion. The sleeve has a fluid-inlet orifice for channelling medicament into the dosage cavity. A piston is at least partially and slidably positioned in the pump sleeve for emitting medicament from the dosage cavity via the nozzle portion. The piston is operational coupled to the deformable body portion. At least one O-shaped ring is provided on an annular portion of the piston slidably engaging the pump sleeve to provide a fluid-tight seal.
Abstract:
A pump-type dispenser (100) for dispensing predetermined doses of medicament in droplets or in spray form to the nasal passage has a rigid vial for medicament, a one-way actuation mechanism (1103), a one-way valve mechanism (3105) in the nozzle area (310), and a spring element (22), both the valve mechanism and the spring element being formed as integral portions of the pump body (3111).A nasal screen (102) aligned with the dispenser nozzle hides the nasal area from public view. The one-way actuation mechanism enables the user to load and dispense a uniform quantity of medicament with a uniform actuation force and speed via a single continuous motion of the actuation mechanism upon application of a very small force on the actuation mechanism by the user. The one-way valve mechanism ensures a one-way movement of medicament from the dispenser, thereby preserving substantially perfect steriliy of the medicament in the dispenser.

Abstract:
This invention is a cartridge (10) for actuating a piston-like or accordion-like dispenser vial for applying medicament to an eye. The cartridge (10) includes a housing for holding the dispenser vial and a telescoping cylinder (18) for compressing the dispenser vial in the longitudinal direction to actuate the vial. The cartridge includes a locking mechanism (43) for locking the telescoping cylinder (18) to restrict its movement and a lever mechanism for releasing the cylinder from the locked position so that a drop is released from the dispenser. The housing includes a finger (57) for engaging the lower eyelid and exposing the conjunctival cul-de-sac.
