    Abstract: A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile stati on deteriorates before the mobile station (101) has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station (101) is in communication with, referred to as an "Active Set". In addition, the mobile station (101) maintains another list of base stations (300) that are proximate to the base stations (300) in the active set. This list is referred to as the "Neighbor Set". A memory within the mobile station (101) includes information that would allow the mobile statio n (101) to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations (300) o n the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station (101) places a base station (300) in the active set upon including the base station (300) in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM).

    Abstract: Access terminal identification management providing a minimum distance between subnets before reusing subnet identifiers. Mobility criteria evaluation determines when to reassign an access terminal identifier. In one embodiment, the mobility criteria is whether any member of the active set for the access terminal belongs to an originating subnet. In an alternate embodiment, the criteria is whether the access terminal has traveled more than a minimum distance from the originating subnet. When a mobility criteria is violated, the access network assigns a new identifier. In one embodiment, the access terminal identifier is a long code mask based on a subnet identifier. Identifier management applies when crossing sector boundaries in a cellular system, and serves to reduce the ambiguity of mapping CC values to full UATI values, and to avoid overlapping assignments.

El paquete de configuracion indica el estado de asignacion de los canales de trafico que pertenecen a la estacion base. Si una terminal de acceso recibe un paquete de configuracion indicando la desasignacion de uno o todos sus canales de trafico, la terminal de acceso inmediatamente cesa su uso de esos canales de trafico. Si una terminal de acceso no decodifica exitosamente un paquete de configuracion durante un tiempo de supervision predeterminado, la terminal de acceso libera su conexion con todas las estaciones base y los canales de trafico asociados.
