Abstract: In a wireless communication system a method for high data rate transmission aggregates information signals processed by at least two modems, wherein the modulated information signals are transmitted using two carrier frequencies. The method provides multiple data transmissions concurrently over a broad bandwidth consistent with single transmission air-interface standards. An apparatus, mobile unit, includes a multi-link (ML) protocol processor that aggregates the information signals from the modems into a point-to-point protocol (PPP) format for interface with conventional data-based systems, such as the internet. The ML processor further receives an aggregated bundle and separates the bundle into its constituent parts for modulation by the modems.

Abstract: A "time multiplexed" transmission scheme capable of reducing the amount of interference from other cells operated at the same frequency band. Each cell in a system transmits in designated time intervals (e.g., time slots) during which other interfering cells may be prevented from transmitting. By temporarily "blanking" transmissions from interfering cells during the designated time slots, the amount of interference from these cells is reduced. The improved signal quality may support transmission at a desired or higher data rate, which may not be possible without cell blanking. In one variant, transmissions from the cells are staggered over different time slots. A set of one or more cells may be designated to transmit in each of a number of slot phases. The cells transmit in a staggered manner on these phases to reduce interference. The transmission scheme may be used for a various channel types (e.g., a control channel) and applications.

Abstract: A system and method is taught for controlling the power level of transmissions within a communication system having a base station, a mobile station, a communication channel, and a pilot channel. The mobile station determines a signal strength value according to a communication signal received by way of the communication channel. A pilot channel signal is determined according to a pilot signal transmitted by way of the pilot channel. The signal to noise ratio of the communication signal is determined according to the determined signal strength value and the pilot channel signal. The power level of a transmission is controlled according to the signal to noise ratio. The noise level in a communication channel within the communication system is estimated. The pilot channel signal includes pilot energy and pilot noise components. The pilot energy component is removed to provide a remaining pilot signal. Communication system operations are controlled according to the remaining pilot signal. The power levels of transmissions are controlled by determining the signal to noise ratio of a signal within the communication channel and determining a difference signal. The difference signal is formed by determining the difference between determined and desired signal to noise ratios. The difference signal is transmitted between the base station and the mobile station. The pilot channel has at least one frame and the power control signal is inserted into the frame. Thus, information representing the strength of the communication signal is transmitted to the base by way of the pilot channel within the frame. The pilot channel can have two information frames for transmitting the power control signal a plurality of times.

Abstract: A novel method and apparatus for providing both voice services and data services in a High Data Rate (HDR) wireless communication system. At least one sub-channel is formed on the forward link of the HDR system. The at least one sub-channel comprise at least one time slot that occupies a specified position in a frame of the forward link. The at least one sub-channel is assigned for voice services. The voice services at the at least one sub-channel are provided in accordance with a CDMA principles. Such principles are disclosed e.g., in IS-95, cdma2000, or other standards known to one skilled in the art. The remaining time slots are used for data services. In another aspect of the invention, additional sub-channels are formed, utilizing all remaining time slots. The additional sub-channels are assigned to data services, such that each sub-channel carries data to a different user. The number of sub-channels assigned to voice services, and the number of sub-channels assigned to voice services changes with varying needs for voice services and data services.
