Depending upon the frequency selectivity and/or the time selectivity of the channel between the mobile station and the base station, an appropriate pattern is selected. In addition, scrambling codes can be applied to the patterns for reducing interference and/or biasing the different mobile stations over the same frequencies and in the same slots.
