Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein address the need in the art for reduced overhead control with the ability to adjust transmission rates as necessary. In one aspect, a first signal indicates an acknowledgement of a decoded subpacket and whether or not a rate control command is generated, and a second signal conditionally indicates the rate control command when one is generated. In another aspect, a grant may be generated concurrently with the acknowledgement. In yet another aspect, a mobile station monitors the first signal, conditionally monitors the second signal as indicated by the first signal, and may monitor a third signal comprising a grant. In yet another aspect, one or more base stations transmit one or more of the various signals. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of providing the flexibility of grant-based control while utilizing lower overhead when rate control commands are used, thus increasing system utilization, increasing capacity and throughput.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for arranging various types of data, and at various rates, into a uniquely structured format for transmission. Data for transmission formatting may be speech data provided by vocoder (14) or different types of secondary traffic. The data organized into frames of a predetermined time duration for transmission by a microprocessor (18). The data frames are organized, depending on the data, to be at one of several data rates. Vocoder data is provided by vocoder (14) at one of several data rates and is organized in the frame according to a predetermined format. Frames may be formatted with a sharing of vocoder data with non-vocoder data to be at a highest frame data rate. Different types of non-vocoder data may be organized so as to also be at the highest frame data rate. Additional control data may be provided within the data frames to support various aspects of the transmission and recovery upon reception.

Abstract: A power control system for use in facilitating transition to an active state. The system includes a first transceiver (104), such as a BTS, having the ability to initiate transmission of a power control function. The transceiver (104) comprises a generator (210) and a transmitter (202) for the power control arrangement. The system further includes a second transceiver (106), such as a terminal, for receiving the power control arrangement and coherently combining the power control arrangement to determine a state transition indication. The second transceiver (106) includes a transmitter (204) that transmits a selected waveform subsequent to the coherent combining. The first transceiver (104) receives the selected waveform, determines a power level associated therewith, and provides feedback to the second transceiver (106). The power control arrangement may include groups of redundant power control data, data transmitted on idle feedback dimensions, or predetermined signal patterns in addition to at least one power control group.

The data combining sub-system comprises input means for receiving the frame of data and the additional data and for combining the frame of data and the additional data to provide a complete packet responsive to a control signal, and control means for providing the control signal.

Abstract: The method can be used in communication engineering, especially for the registration of mobile communication devices in cellular communication medium. It reduces the paging of the mobile station and secures better distribution of the mobile registration stations between the cells. By the method, the mobile station (10) records whether it is moving in a new cell (C2) which is remoter than a preset distance from a previous cell (C1) where it was registered. The cellular base stations (12) transmit the respective information for the location of the base station and the length of the distance. The mobile station (10) receives information about the location of the base station (12) and calculates the distance (18) from cell (C1) in which it had been registered for the last time, to cell (C2) in which it is at the moment. When the calculated distance is greater than the value of the distance connected to the registered cell, the mobile station (10) records and its pages are transmitted to a group of cells (16 & 20) at such distance from the registration cell corresponding to the value of the distance transmitted by it.
