Abstract: A method and apparatus for time division duplex (TDD) repeating a spread spectrum signal, where spread spectrum signal is comprised of a series of code symbol modulated with a pseudonoise (PN) sequence. The TDD repeater receives intermittently the spread spectrum signal at a location remote from a source supplying the spread spectrum signal. The TDD repeater amplifies and delays the received spread spectrum signal by a predetermined amount. The TDD repeater transmits intermittently the delayed amplified received spread spectrum signal such that the TDD is not receiving the spread spectrum signal when it is transmitting the signal energy.

Abstract: The invention relates to a communication system in which transmission takes place according to a format which permits different types of data to be combined and transmitted within a single transmission. The novel feature is that the communication system transmits variable length frames of data in packets, and that a data combining and transmission sub-system (14, 16, 18, 20) is provided so that when a frame of data does not require a complete packet for transmission, the data combining sub-system combines the frame of data with additional data to provide a complete packet. The data combining sub-system comprises input means for receiving the frame of data and the additional data and for combining the frame of data and the additional data to provide a complete packet responsive to a control signal, and control means for providing the control signal.

Abstract: A cellular communication system in which a system user and another user communicate with each other by way of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted via a cell-site in which system: the system user comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said cell-site, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said cell-site and means for measuring signal quality in said information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user; the cell-site comprises a transmitter for transmitting information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals to said system user, a receiver for receiving information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from said system user and adjusting means for adjusting the power of information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted from the cell-site ; ; and power control means is provided for controlling the transmission power of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals by measuring the signal power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals received by the system user and transmitting data representing the measured power to the cell-site by way of the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals, the adjusting means being responsive to the data in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals from the system user to adjust the power in the information carrying spread spectrum modulated signals transmitted by the cell-site.

Abstract: A method and system for determining the position of an object using a fixed station and a plurality of earth orbit satellites whose positions are known. Separate periodic signals are transmitted from the fixed station via first and second satellites to the object whose postion is to be determined. The phase offset in periodic characteristics of the periodic signals as received from the first and second satellites is measured at the object. The phase offset corresponds to a relative time difference in propagation of the signals traveling two different paths to the object. The object transmits via the first satellite a return signal indicative of the measured relative time difference. This return signal is activated some time in the future according to the object local time, which is slaved to receipt of the periodic signal sent through the first satellite. This future time is the start of the particular time period as decided by the fixed station's schedule. At the fixed station, an instantaneous round trip delay, determined by the time offset of the current transmission clock time relative to the receive clock time of reception of the return signal, along with the measured relative time difference sent back on the return signal, is used to calculate the distances between the first and second satellites to the object. From these distances the position of the object is calculated.

Abstract: The invention relates to a system and a method for signal modulation in a spread spectrum communication system. Pseudo-noise sequences (PN) are generated by employing spread spectrum communication techniques, thereby creating orthogonality between the users, so that mutual interference is reduced, allowing a higher transmission capacity and better performance of the communication link. Using orthogonal PN codes, the cross-correlation is zero over a predetermined time interval, resulting in the lack of interference between the orthogonal codes, only the time synchronization of the time frames of the codes being required. In a specific embodiment, signals are transmitted between a cell-site (12 and 14) and mobile telephone units (16 and 18) using direct sequence spread spectrum communication signals. Pilot-, synchronization-, paging- and voice-channels are defined in a cell-to-mobile unit transmission link. The information communicated through the communication link channels, from the cell to the mobile telephone unit is generally encoded, interleaved and bi-phased shift (BPSK) modulated with orthogonal covering of each BPSK symbol but with quadrature phase shift (QPSK) modulation, for spreading the covered signals. In a mobile unit-to-cell transmission link, access and voice channels are defined. The information communicated through the communication link channels, from the mobile telephone unit to the cell, is generally encoded, interleaved, with orthogonal signalling and QPSK spreading.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for adding and removing a target base station from a network of base stations, which includes base stations adjacent the target base station. The apparatus is comprised of two attenuators: a first for setting an artificial receive noise power level and a second for setting a transmit level. The transmit level determines the forward link coverage area of the base station. The artificial noise level sets the reverse link coverage area of the base station. When a base station is added, initially the transmit power is low and the artificial receive noise power is high such that the forward and reverse link coverage areas are collocated in close proximity to the base station. As the base station blossoms into full operation, the artificial receive noise power is decreased and the transmit level is increased such that the two coverage areas of the base station remain balanced as the coverage areas expand. When a base station is to be removed from a system, the same attenuators are used to wilt the two coverage areas in unison as the power level transmitted from the base station decreases.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for matching the location of the forward link handoff boundary to the reverse link handoff boundary. A system constant is chosen which defines the product of the received power and the transmitted pilot power at every base station. The reverse link power level is measured at the base station and the forward link power level is compensated for the reverse link loading to maintain the constant product. Thereby the forward link handoff boundary to the reverse link handoff boundary are aligned to the same location.
