In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may receive a paging grant that includes a short paging message and a notification of a reason that the short paging message was triggered; determine that the paging grant includes the short paging message; and obtain the notification of the reason that the short paging message was triggered based at least in part on determining that the paging grant includes the short paging message. Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A wireless device, such as a user equipment and/or a base station, may determine that an active transmit beam has changed from a first transmit beam to a second transmit beam, the second transmit beam being different from the first transmit beam. The wireless device may identify a reference signal identifier that is associated with the second transmit beam. The wireless device may update, based at least in part on the identifying, a channel state information (CSI) resource setting to include the reference signal identifier, wherein the CSI resource setting is associated with the active transmit beam.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for updating beam-based communications are described. A base station may configure a user equipment (UE) with a set of beam management configurations, which may be used to modify (e.g., dynamically or periodically) beam-based communications. For example, the base station may indicate a beam configuration for utilization by the UE and the UE may switch to the indicated beam configuration or update a currently used beam configuration based on the indication. In another example, a set of beam configurations may be sequentially ordered, and the base station may indicate to the UE to use the next beam configuration in the sequence of beam configurations. The update to the beam configuration may be triggered based on a distance change (e.g., UE and base station getting closer or farther apart) or a reference signal measurement between the UE and the base station, among other factors.

Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure relate to a method of operating a scheduled entity for wireless communication with a network. In some aspects, the scheduled entity transmits a message that requests a scheduling entity to transmit at least one reference signal. The scheduled entity obtains channel state information based on the at least one reference signal. The scheduled entity transmits a report that includes the channel state information. In other aspects, the scheduled entity transmits a message that requests a scheduling entity to schedule a reference signal transmission for the scheduled entity. The scheduled entity obtains an assignment of resources for transmission of the reference signal in response to the message. The scheduled entity transmits the reference signal based on the assignment of resources. Other aspects, embodiments, and features are also claimed and described.

Abstract: Various aspects directed towards performing a random access procedure are disclosed. In one example, a parameter is identified from a plurality of parameters, and an uplink (UL) resource associated with a random access procedure is selected based on a value associated with the parameter. A random access procedure communication is then transmitted via the selected UL resource. In another example, different parameters are supported by a scheduling entity such that each of the parameters has a corresponding plurality of different potential values. Here, the scheduling entity enables a scheduled entity to select an UL resource to perform a random access procedure based on a value corresponding to a particular one of the parameters. A random access procedure communication is then received from the scheduled entity via the UL resource.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described that provide for signaling and switching of beam pair links (BPLs) for directional transmission beams between a base station and a user equipment (UE). A threshold value may be determined, which corresponds to an amount of time for a UE to receive and decode control information, and apply a different BPL than a current BPL that that is in use. The UE may maintain a BPL for data, which is used during data transmission time intervals (TTIs) until an indication is received to change the BPL for data. The UE and the base station may determine to change between BPLs based at least in part on the threshold value and a scheduling offset between a control channel transmission that allocates resources for a data TTI and a start of the data TTI.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. The described techniques provide for determining to not transmit a portion of a second signal that overlaps in time with a first signal. A user equipment (UE) may identify a first signal to be communicated during a first time duration using a first beam pair link (BPL) and identify a second signal that is scheduled to be communicated during a second time duration using a second BPL. The UE may identify a misalignment between timing advance values for the BPLs, the misalignment causing an overlap in time between the first signal scheduled during the first time duration and the second signal scheduled during the second time duration. The UE may determine whether to drop part of the second signal and communicate the first signal and a remaining portion of the second signal based at least in part on the determining.

Abstract: A node for wireless communication identifies a number of actually transmitted reference signals. The node identifies a number of available PRACH time-frequency resources and preamble indices in a time period. The node identifies a number of configured PRACH time-frequency resources or PRACH preamble indices per reference signal. The node determines that the available number of PRACH time-frequency resources or PRACH preamble indices within the time period is not an integer multiple of the product of the number of actually transmitted reference signals and the number of configured PRACH time-frequency resources or PRACH preamble indices per reference signal. The node maps the actually transmitted reference signals to the available PRACH time-frequency resources and preamble indices based on the identified information and determination.

A wireless device may utilize different beam configurations for different signal types, traffic demand, path loss, capabilities of the wireless device or other wireless devices in the system, and the like. The wireless device also may be capable of determining different duplexing modes, which may be utilized in addition to the different beam configurations. The duplexing mode may be based on received measurement reports (e.g., from one or more reference signals) or in some instances, the duplexing mode may be determined by another node (e.g., a core network node, a base station) and transmitted to the wireless device.
