Abstract:
A system and method for minimizing latency for direct group communications, such as push-to-talk (PTT) calls, among a group of wireless telecommunication devices on a wireless telecommunication network. The wireless telecommunication device has a dormant state without an open dedicated traffic channel for communications therefrom and an active state in which the wireless devices opens a dedicated traffic channel for an outgoing communication from the wireless telecommunication device, to include a direct communication stream. Either the wireless telecommunication device or an intermittent communication server for group communication streams can buffer the initial communication data of a group communication stream while the sending and/or receiving wireless telecommunication device changes from a dormant state to an active state with an open dedicated traffic channel.
Abstract:
Systems and methods for optimizing paging cycles in a wireless communication system are disclosed. An access terminal can include logic configured to determine an optimal paging cycle and logic configured to set the paging cycle based on the optimal paging cycle, where the paging cycle varies based on at least one optimizing metric.
Abstract:
In group wireless telecommunication, such as push-to-talk (PTT) calls, a voice communication is broadcast through Internet protocol data packets to other member devices of the PTT group. At least one communication server receives a single communication stream from a communicating wireless device, such as a PTT call, and creates a group communication to all wireless telecommunication devices of the designated group with the broadcast of Internet protocol data packets containing the voice data of the communication stream to one or more wireless telecommunication devices of the receiving group that can receive and handle the packets. Other wireless network infrastructure can be used to assist the communication server in generation and broadcast of the Internet protocol data packets to the receiving wireless telecommunication devices.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for optimizing registration and paging in a group communication system use mobility of the mobile stations to minimize the frequency of registrations performed by the mobile stations as well as the area of paging the mobile stations. When the mobile stations have a low mobility status, the base station reduces the area of paging the mobile stations so that the paging channel load is reduced.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for delivering information to a dormant target mobile provides for sending the information when no dedicated traffic channel is established. In one embodiment, the method provides for sending the information in short data bursts. Therefore, the disclosed embodiments provide for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time by exchanging group call signaling even when the target mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for joining a user to a call in a group communication network provides for receiving an indication from a user who wishes to initiate a group call and sending a request to a server to add the user to the group call if the group call is in progress. The method and apparatus also provides for announcing the group call to the user, receiving acknowledgement from the user who wishes to participate in the announced group call, and forwarding media to the user after its traffic channel is re-established. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
Abstract:
A wireless dispatch service in a full duplex wireless telephone system includes forward and reverse link pairs assigned to each voice communication device in a dispatch system. Depending on whether a device is talking or listening, one of the links for that device can be idled to conserve system energy, thereby approximating a half duplex system.
Abstract:
A system and method for enabling simultaneous voice and data communication over a communication channel having a single pair of allocated Walsh codes in a wireless telecommunication network. A converter server intercepts voice data coming from and going to from mobile telecommunication devices, such as mobile telephones, and converts the voice data into data packets, preferably in an IP Protocol. In transmission, the packets with voice data are then sent to the communication server(s) hosting the communication channel for the mobile device and are carried with non-voice data packets in a single communication channel to other mobile communication devices. In receipt, the voice data packets can be returned to analog voice data at the converter server, or alternately, the mobile device will handle the separation and conversion of the voice data from data packets received.
Abstract:
A system and method for providing high performance dispatch services for a push-to-talk (PTT) communication over a wireless communication network. When a wireless device is powered up, it registers with a server and then transitions to a paging state instead of an idle state. When the wireless device is ready to transmit PTT communications, it sends a message to the server and transitions to a transmission state when a confirmation is received from the server. Once in the transmission state, the wireless device is ready to transmit the PTT communications to the server.
Abstract:
A system, method, and computer program for providing a greater reliability for a direct-communication, such as push-to-talk communication, being bridged between members of a communicating group of wireless telecommunication devices. Each wireless telecommunication device, such as a cellular telephone or PDA, of a plurality periodically informs a group communication server of the presence of that wireless telecommunication device on the wireless telecommunication network such that upon receipt of a request from a wireless telecommunication device to bridge a direct communication, the group communication server will attempt to bridge the requested direct communication with the target set of wireless telecommunication devices only if at least one of the wireless telecommunication devices of the target set has indicated its presence on the wireless telecommunication network.
