Abstract:
In an embodiment, an originating communication device within a wireless communications system sends a call request to a server to initiate a communication session with a target communication device, and also sends, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent to the target communication device from the server in addition to a call announce message for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session. The server sends the call announce message and the alerting data to the target communication device. The target communication device receives the call announce message and the alerting data, notifies a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session and outputs the alerting data to the user of the target communication device in conjunction with the notification.
Abstract:
In an embodiment, an originating communication device (132) within a wireless communications system sends a call request (134) to a server (600) to initiate a communication session with a target communication device (138), and also sends, along with the call request, a session description request, the session description request requesting alerting data to be sent (615) to the target communication device from the server in addition to a call announce message • for announcing the communication session to the at least one target communication device, the alerting data describing a nature of the communication session. The server sends the call announce message and the alerting data to the target communication device (615). The target communication device receives the call announce message and the alerting data, notifies a user of the target communication device of the announced communication session and outputs the alerting data to the user of the target communication' device in conjunction with the notification (620).
Abstract:
A system, method, and computer program for providing a greater reliability for a direct-communication, such as push-to-talk communication, being bridged between members of a communicating group of wireless telecommunication devices. Each wireless telecommunication device, such as a cellular telephone or PDA, of a plurality periodically informs a group communication server of the presence of that wireless telecommunication device on the wireless telecommunication network such that upon receipt of a request from a wireless telecommunication device to bridge a direct communication, the group communication server will attempt to bridge the requested direct communication with the target set of wireless telecommunication devices only if at least one of the wireless telecommunication devices of the target set has indicated its presence on the wireless telecommunication network.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for delivering media to a group of target communication devices provides for multicasting media to the group of target communication devices to save network resources. The disclosed embodiments provide for a significant reduction in network traffic and media processing time by transmitting media in multicast transport mode, where a single copy of the media destined for a group of target recipients is transmitted to a wireless infrastructure over the multicast path. The wireless infrastructure replicates and transmits one copy of the media to each of the target recipients that are assigned to dedicated channels, but multicasts one copy of the media to the target recipients that are assigned to a shared channel.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for joining a requester of a desired service to a local group of providers for the desired service allows the requester of the desired service to instantly get in touch with the local group of providers for the desired service, regardless of the current location of the service requester and without requiring the service requester to individually call each provider of the desired service.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for initiating a group call in a group communication network provides for receiving a member list from a user and sending a request to a server to initiate the group call based on the received member list. The method and apparatus also provides for receiving a response from the server indicating that said initiating the group call is in progress, alerting the user to provide media, and buffering the media for transmission after a traffic channel is re-established. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for selectively enabling an early push-to-talk (PTT) call set up request in a wireless communications network. When a user activates a directory application on a wireless device, the wireless device checks for network information received from a base station. If the network information indicates that the network is of a predetermined type and can advantageously set up the PTT call, the wireless device enables the early PTT call set up request by sending a data channel set up request to the base station. If the network information does not indicate the network is of the predetermined type, the wireless device does not send any data channel request to the base station until the user has actually initiates a PTT call.
Abstract:
A system and method for enabling simultaneous voice and data communication over a communication channel having a single pair of allocated Walsh codes in a wireless telecommunication network. A converter server intercepts voice data coming from and going to from mobile telecommunication devices, such as mobile telephones, and converts the voice data into data packets, preferably in an IP Protocol. In transmission, the packets with voice data are then sent to the communication server(s) hosting the communication channel for the mobile device and are carried with non-voice data packets in a single communication channel to other mobile communication devices. In receipt, the voice data packets can be returned to analog voice data at the converter server, or alternately, the mobile device will handle the separation and conversion of the voice data from data packets received.
Abstract:
A system and method for providing high performance dispatch services for a push-to-talk (PTT) communication over a wireless communication network. When a wireless device is powered up, it registers with a server and then transitions to a paging state instead of an idle state. When the wireless device is ready to transmit PTT communications, it sends a message to the server and transitions to a transmission state when a confirmation is received from the server. Once in the transmission state, the wireless device is ready to transmit the PTT communications to the server.
