Abstract: In one aspect, methods of determining a size distribution of water droplets in a cloud are described herein. In some embodiments, a method of determining a size 5 distribution of water droplets in a cloud comprises sampling a depth of the cloud with a beam of electromagnetic radiation, measuring a scattering signal of the electromagnetic radiation returned from the cloud over a range of field of view angles to provide a measured scattering curve [proa,(O)], removing a portion of the measured scattering curve, replacing the removed portion with an extrapolation of the remaining measured scattering 10 curve to provide an estimated scattering curve, and determining a first estimate droplet size distribution [nt1)(D)] from the estimated scattering curve. r --- - gO) I ) 0) E -S* ' 0 uE E*1 = COD C) 0 =C ?=, ar :C 0 CD cEO) wa) a) M C E0 0 U =)~~~~ - )m II) 0i E >cJ - E) - n a) Z (0 (O!a)' a) )~ CW 0 J to 0- cu, :ZL a)U E~a ixL ) 0 6c' a) Ea E. 10 U) U n 0' u )c 3( 0) .0 C 0 0 0 M Ot cli ) m * = > E i0)0 33 1 ? Abstract: A method and system are provided for authenticating a potential threat detected in a perimeter zone of a target site. The method comprises the steps of: detecting a potential threat in the perimeter zone of the target site; upon detection, interrogating said potential threat for a response by a wireless transmission; declaring the potential threat unauthorised if no response is transmitted wirelessly within a predetermined time interval from said interrogation; receiving said response if transmitted, and determining if the response comprises a proper access code; and declaring the potential threat unauthorised if the received response is determined not to comprise a proper access code.

Abstract: A wide field scanning laser obstacle awareness system (LOAS) for use on-board an aircraft is provided. The LOAS serves for alerting an operator of obstacles posing a risk of collision with said aircraft. The system comprising: a light source for generating a pulsed laser beam of light; a light detector; a plurality of optical elements for directing said pulsed laser beam from said system with a predetermined pattern scanned azimuthally over a wide field, said plurality of optical elements also for receiving reflections of said pulsed laser beam from at least one object along said predetermined pattern and directing said laser beam reflections to said light detector. The predetermined pattern includes a variation in elevation of the directed pulsed laster beam in relation to an elevation of the aircraft. Additionally, the system has means for determining substantially the azimuth position of the directed pulsed laser beam, means for determining substantially the elevation of the directed pulsed laser beam, and a display apparatus including an image screen for displaying a limited field of view, wherein the wide field of view of the system extends substantially beyond the field of view of the image screen. A processor means is coupled to said light detector, display apparatus, azimuth position determining means and elevation determining means for determining the location of the at least one object in range, azimuth and elevation in relation to a flight path of the aircraft. The processor means drives the display apparatus to display an indication representing the at least one object in range, azimuth and elevation. The indication of the at least one object comprises an image of a bar. The bar image is disposed vertically at the far left of the screen of the display apparatus when the object location is azimuthally outside the field of view of the display apparatus to the left, and the bar image is disposed vertically at the far right of the screen of the display apparatus when the object location is azimuthally outside the field of view of the display apparatus to the right.

Abstract: A laser-based altimeter for use on-board an aircraft comprises: a first housing including a hollow cavity and an exit aperture, and a second housing including a hollow cavity and an entrance aperture. A laser source and a plurality of first optical elements are fixedly supported in a compact configuration within the hollow cavity of the first housing. The plurality of first optical elements directs laser beams generated by the laser source from a first optical path to a second optical path which exits the first housing through the exit aperture. At least one second optical element is configured within the hollow cavity of the second housing to form a telescope with a predetermined field of view. The telescope receives at the entrance aperture reflections of the pulsed laser beams from objects within the field of view thereof and focuses the received reflections substantially to a focal point. A light detector is included for receiving and converting the focused reflections into electrical signals representative thereof. The first and second housings are fixedly secured in alignment with respect to each other to permit the second optical path of the pulsed laser beams to be adjusted within the field of view of the telescope. A mirror apparatus is the only first optical element of the plurality that is fixedly adjustable for directing the second optical path within the field of view of the telescope, the mirror apparatus being lockable in place after final adjustment. The first and second housings may be part of a common housing.
