Abstract: Thermally-stable polycrystalline diamond materials of this invention compris e a first phase including a plurality of bonded together diamond crystals, and a second phas e including a reaction product formed between a binder/catalyst material and a material reactive with the binder/catalyst material. The reaction product is disposed within interstiti al regions of the polycrystalline diamond material that exists between the bonded diamond crystals. The first and second phases are formed during a single high pressure/high temperature process condition. The reaction product has a coefficient of thermal expansion that is relatively closer to that of the bonded together diamond crystals than that of the binder/catalyst material, thereby providing an improved degree of thermal stability to the polycrystalline diamond material .

Abstract: A hardfacing material comprises carbide particles that have a barrier coating of cobalt, nickel, iron or an alloy thereof, and a binder alloy. The carbide particles may be sintered tungsten carbide with a size of 16-40 mesh (420-1190 microns) or a size of 100-325 mesh. The barrier coating has a thickness of 5-76 microns. The material is used to hardface steel drill bit components such as cutting elements on roller cone drill bits.

Abstract: An elastomeric seal (44 in Fig. 2) comprising an ordered elastomeric composite material 48, the ordered elastomeric composite material comprising an ordered arrangement of a number of first elstopmeric phases distributed uniformly within a continuous matrix second phase. The second phase may be formed from an elastomeric material that is relatively harder than an elastomeric material that is used to form the first phases. Each first phase can be of the form of a core 52, and the second phase can be formed from a number of shells 54 that each surround a repective core 52, the cores 52 and shells 54 are aligned coaxially with one another to provide a cellular structure 50. The seal being typically of the form of an annular ring (44 in Fig. 2) adapted for use in a rotary cone drill bit.

Abstract: A rock bit insert 13 made of a cermet (e.g. cemented WC) has a wear resistant coating formed by making a conformable mixture of one or more powders selected from cermets, carbides, borides, nitrides, carbonitrides and refractory metals with an applying agent (e.g. a polymer binder), conforming and applying the mixture onto a surface of the insert 13 and sintering the mixture by pressurising it at elevated temperature (e.g. pressed omnidirectionally at a pressure in the range 10-120 ksi, at a temperature in the range 1000-1500{C). The mixture may be applied to the insert in the form of a slurry or a green body shaped to complement the surface of the insert 13, which may be curved. There may be at least one intermediate layer present between the insert 13 and the wear resistant coating. The insert 13 may be in either in presintered or fully densified form when the mixture is applied.
