    Abstract: A drill bit (30, fig 3) includes a body (32, fig 3) having a lower end face for engaging a rock formation, the end face has a number of raised ribs 34 extending from the face of the bit body and separated by a number of channels. At least one of the ribs has a cutting portion, towards its base, that includes a first diamond impregnated matrix material 80, wherein the remaining portion of the rib includes a second diamond impregnated matrix material 43. The second diamond impregnated material is harder than the first diamond impregnated material. The first diamond matrix material may extend from the base along the sidewall a selected height H. A portion 48 of the gage surface region of the rib may include a third diamond impregnated matrix material 40, which is harder than the first material.

    Abstract: A drill bit insert that comprises a first matrix material in which plurality of particles are dispersed. Each particle comprises a coarse abrasive particle encapsulated with a shell formed from a second matrix material having abrasive particles dispersed therein. Also an impreg drill bit which comprises a body with ribs 50 formed thereon and where at least one rib 50 is infiltrated with particles comprising a coarse abrasive particle 46 encapsulated within a shell formed from a matrix material 44 having abrasive particles 42 dispersed therein. In both cases the coarse particle may be sintered tungsten carbide-cobalt, macrocrystalline or cast tungsten carbide, boron nitride, diamond, tungsten, silicon carbide, boron carbide, alumina, tool steels or combinations thereof. The abrasive particles are preferably diamond. The matrix of the shell may comprise tungsten carbide, tungsten, cobalt, iron, nickel, copper and combinations thereof.

    Abstract: A method of forming a diamond impregnated cutting structure such as a cutter insert, involves placing uniformly coated diamond particles in a mould, cold pressing the coated particles and then heating the compacted coated particles with a matrix material to form the diamond impregnated cutting structure. The matrix material can be selected from various metal carbides and nitrides. The heating step may be at between 1500 F and 2100 F and may be a high temperature, high pressure process or an isostatic pressing. The heating step may also comprise a hot-pressing process followed by a high pressure, high temperature process. Also claimed is an insert for a drill bit characterised by a thermally stable shearing portion on a diamond impregnated body, where at least one of the structures has a thermally stable coating.
