A portable terminal includes a near-field communication (NFC) device for performing information communication via near-field communication; a write button; and a read button. In order to write information stored in the portable terminal into an information providing apparatus, a user moves the portable terminal close to the information providing apparatus such that a distance between the portable terminal and the information providing apparatus is 10 cm or less while pressing the write button. In order to read information stored in the information providing apparatus into the portable terminal, a user moves the portable terminal close to the information providing apparatus such that a distance between the portable terminal and the information providing apparatus is 10 cm or less while pressing the read button.

A communication system includes first and second communication devices that carry out wireless communication. The first communication device includes a setter configured to set a first indication mode and a corresponding second indication mode, a sender configured to send data representing the second indication mode to the second communication device when communication has been established with the second communication device, and a first indicator configured to indicate the establishment of communication in the first indication mode, correspondingly to indication in the second indication mode by the second communication device. The second communication device includes a receiver configured to receive the data representing the second indication mode, and a second indicator configured to indicate the establishment of communication in the second indication mode, correspondingly to the indication in the first indication mode by the first communication device.

The present invention relates to a communication system and communication method which enable various types of near field communication, and a data processing apparatus. NFC communication apparatuses 1 to 3 have two features in that each can perform communication in two communication modes and that each can perform data transmission at a plurality of transfer rates. The two communication modes consist of a passive mode and an active mode. In the passive mode, between the NFC communication apparatuses 1 and 2, for example, the NFC communication apparatus 1 transmits data to the NFC communication apparatus 2 by modulating electromagnetic waves generated by itself, while the NFC communication apparatus 2 transmits data to the NFC communication apparatus 1 by performing load modulation on the electromagnetic waves generated by the NFC communication apparatus 1. Alternatively, in the active mode, either of the NFC communication apparatuses 1 and 2 transmits data by modulating electromagnetic waves generated by itself. The present invention can be applied to, for example, an IC card system, etc.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system, a communication apparatus, a notice method, a recording medium, and a program capable of simply specifying a communication opposite party. SOLUTION: Each of control sections 16 establishes an expressing method of the initiators and an expressing method of targets corresponding to the initiators on the basis of random numbers generated by a random number generator 13. A near field communication section 12 of an initiator transmits data denoting a target expressing method to a target. An expression section 15 of each of the initiator and the target expresses that a secure communication path is established between the initiator and the target by the expressing method established by a control section 16 of the initiator. When focusing on communication between the NFC devices 1 and 2 in the passive mode as is the case with a conventional IC card system, for example, the NFC device 1 out of the NFC devices 1 and 2 modulates an electromagnetic wave generated by itself to transmit data to the NFC device 2, while the NFC device 2 load-modulates the electromagnetic wave generated by the NFC device 1 to transmit data to the NFC device 1. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a near-field communication (NFC) device for performing the writing and reading of information with an extremely simple user interface. SOLUTION: A portable terminal 3 is provided with an NFC device 3-2 for performing the communication of information by near-field communication, a write button 3-5 and a read button 3-6. In the case of writing information from the portable terminal 3 to an external apparatus 2, a user moves the portable terminal 3 close to the information providing apparatus 2 such that the distance between the portable terminal 3 and the information providing apparatus 2 is about 10 cm while depressing the write button 3-5. In the case of reading out information from the external apparatus 2 to the portable terminal 3, the user moves the portable terminal 3 close to the information providing device 2 such that the distance between the terminal 3 and the apparatus 2 is about 10cm while depressing the read button 3-6.
