    Abstract: A blue fluorescent material comprises a silicate having the empirical formula: M3MgSi2O8 where M is at least one of the elements Sr, Ca, and Ba, the silicate containing an activator of bivalent Eu in an amount of from 0.1 to 10 moles for one mole of the silicate. The blue fluorescent material exhibits no luminance saturation even at high current densities and has an excellent temperature characteristic.

    Abstract: Provided are a reflective liquid crystal display device and a liquid crystal display unit capable of eliminating or minimizing the occurrence of misalignment specific to a vertically aligned liquid crystal due to the structure of a pixel groove and achieving higher contrast and superior image quality. In a reflective pixel electrode (42), a peripheral portion is inclined, and the reflective pixel electrode has a trapezoidal shape so that the width of the reflective pixel electrode (42) increases from the top side to the bottom side. When a side surface of the reflective pixel electrode (42) is inclined so as to eliminate verticality in a cross section of the reflective pixel electrode (42), liquid crystal molecules aligned in a horizontal direction to an extreme in a pixel groove portion can be eliminated. Even if liquid crystal molecules are locally and slightly aligned in a horizontal direction, sufficient verticality can be maintained in the pixel groove portion by an interaction with vertically aligned liquid crystal molecules around the horizontally aligned liquid crystal molecules.

    Abstract: A magnetic head comprising a magnetic path (1) and a vertically magnetizable film (3). The magnetic path contains a first gap (G1) facing a magnetic recording medium (5) and a second gap (G2). The vertically magnetizable film (3) is formed across the second gap (G2) on the principal plane or outer circumference of the magnetic path (1). A linearly polarized light beam is irradiated onto the vertically magnetizable film and the resulting reversal of magnetization in the vertically magnetizable film is detected through the use of a polar Kerr effect. This scheme allows data to be reproduced with sufficient sensitivity from tracks of very small widths.
