Abstract: The appts. records on an optical disc (2) having a memory (14) for storing input digital data compressed from a continuous signal. A signal encoder (15) arranges data from memory (14). The arrangement is multiple clusters at an interval of a set number of sectors annexing to each a linking sector. The cluster data is interleaved for the recording circuit (3, 4). An abnormality detection circuit (30) acts through a controller (7) to inhibit recording upon detection of abnormality. This performs a read out control of the memory.

Abstract: During recording inputted data are sequentially written into a memory (14) at one transfer rate and are read out at a second, higher transfer rate for recording on a record medium (2). The reading of the memory (14) is such that data in a preset first amount are successively read from the memory (14) to always ensure a write space in the memory (14) which has a capacity which is higher than a predetermined second amount when the amount of the inputted data stored in the memory (14) exceeds the first amount. During playback, the recorded data are reproduced at a second transfer rate, which is higher than a first transfer rate required for outputting the reproduced data, and are written in a memory (22). The thus written data are successively read out of the memory (22) as reproduced output data at the first transfer rate. The writing of the reproduced data to the memory (22) is controlled so that a second amount of the reproduced data is written into the memory (22) and an amount of reproduced data, not less than a first amount, is always stored in the memory (22) when the amount of the reproduced data stored in the memory (22) becomes not higher than the first given amount.

Abstract: A recording and/or reproducing apparatus for a disc-shaped recording medium (1) on which management data to manage recorded data are recorded, including a recording and/or reproducing unit (3), a memory (13) and a memory controller (12). The recording and/or reproducing unit (3) records data on the disc-shaped recording medium (1) and/or reproduces recorded data from the disc-shaped recording medium (1). The memory (13) temporarily stores therein data which are reproduced by the recording and/or reproducing unit (3), and temporarily stores therein data which are supplied to the recording and/or reproducing unit (3) and recorded on the disc-shaped recording medium (1). The memory (13) includes a first storage area for storing data which are produced from the disc-shaped recording medium (1) by the recording and/or reproducing unit (3), or data which are supplied to the recording and/or reproducing unit and recorded on the disc-shaped recording medium (1), and a second storage area for storing the management data for the disc-shaped recording medium (1) which are read out by the recording and/or reproducing unit. The memory controller (12) controls a writ-in and read-out operation of data into the memory. When data are recorded on the disc-shaped recording medium by the recording and/or reproducing unit, the memory controller (12) stores into the first storage area of the memory (13) the data which will be recorded on the disc-shaped recording medium (1) by the recording and/or reproducing unit (3) while storing into the second storage area of the memory the management data for the disc-shaped recording medium (1) which are read out by the recording and/or reproducing unit (3).

Abstract: An optical recording medium is provided which has a substrate and a signal recording layer provided on the substrate and in which an information signal is recorded in the form of microscopic pits. A light beam is focused on the signal recording layer and some change of the light beam carried by a return light from the signal recording layer is detected to read the information signal recorded on the signal recording layer. The optical recording medium has a diameter of 65 mm or less and a thickness of 0.4 to 0.7 mm. An information signal recording area extends outwardly from a radial position of 12.5 mm or less from the center of the medium. The ratio in area between the information signal recording area and non-signal recording area is 3.4 or more. The storage capacity of this medium is 2 gigabytes or more. The optical recording medium has formed at the center thereof a center hole around which an annular table-abutment convexing to one side of the medium is formed. A magnetic-clamping hub is installed in the center hole and thus the medium is magnetically clamped to a rotation driving mechanism of an optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus. The compactness and high density of recording of the optical recording medium will contribute greatly to a further compact structure of a recording and/or reproducing apparatus in which the medium is to be used.
