    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser equipped with a semiconductor laser element, in which the output current characteristic of a laser output to a monitoring PD is linear in both the low-output region and the high-output region, and in the transition region to the high-output region from the low-output region. SOLUTION: This laser coupler comprise a PDIC 12, the semiconductor laser element 14, and a Pin PD 16 which are integrated on the PDIC and the monitoring PD 18 which is installed on the PDIC at the front of the emission direction of the semiconductor laser element, and which detects the optical output of a laser beam of the semiconductor laser element for outputting an output control signal. The planar pattern of the light-receiving plane of the monitoring PD is formed into a trapezoidal shape, which is demarcated by two side faces forming the same angle as an emission angle θpall2 of the laser beam at high output. An emission angle (θpall) is wide at low output, and it becomes narrow at high output. The monitoring PD having the light- receiving planar pattern into the trapezoidal shape cannot receive a part of the laser beam of the semiconductor laser element. Consequently, coupling (F1 ) of the semiconductor laser element to the monitoring PD becomes small, and since coupling F2 is constant, adjustment ImL=1 is made.

SOLUTION: When the disk D is inserted, a DVD pickup 1b is set in a DVD pickup mode to be used. As the discrimination operation, an objective lens 2b for DVD is forcibly elevated or lowered within a focus search stroke range, and it is instructed to start the output of a focus search drive signal. A system controller 30 detects the discrimination signal DD supplied from a discrimination signal forming circuit 27 and measures the period between two pulses while executing the movement of the objective lens 2b for DVD within the prescribed region. A measured value and a reference value are then compared and the disk D is judged to be a CD when the measured value is longer.
