Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a display device with picture elements of an organic electroluminescent(EL) element of an upper luminous surface arranged in a matrix form and aims to realize a mounting structure with high opening ratio when the partition walls are arranged also on th surface side of the substrate to shield the light. SOLUTION: The display device is installed with a substrate 1, multiple picture elements formed on the substrate, and partition walls to insulate adjacent picture elements. Each picture element consists of the lower layer part LL including wiring X, Y and M formed on the substrate 1, the upper layer part UL containing organic EL element OLED, and the middle layer part to electrically insulate the lower layer part LL and the upper layer part UL. The organic EL element OLED is connected to the wiring M via the contact hole CON opening to the middle layer part ML. The partition walls are arranged on the upper layer part UL to overlap the regions including the contact hole CON unsuited to the formation of the organic EL device OLED.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure of an organic electroluminescent element which can be automatically recovered from a short circuit defect. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element includes a laminate 50 having a structure in which an organic luminescent layer 10 made from an organic compound is sandwiched between a cathode K and an anode A opposing each other; a hermetic container 60 accommodating the laminate 50 and shutting off outside air; and a gas 90 sealed in the hermetic container 60. The gas 90 is composed chiefly of a chemically inert gas, with oxygen gas added thereto in a concentration of 0.0001 to 20%. The thickness of the organic layer 10 sandwiched between the cathode K and the anode A is about 100 nm, and whiskers or the like may form between these electrodes, often leading to a short circuit defect. Inclusion of oxygen gas in the sealed atmosphere allows aging to cause whiskers causing such a defect to oxidize and lose conductivity, to thereby allow recovery from the short circuit defect.

An organic film 24 made of an organic luminescent material, a second electrode material film 25 and a protective film 26 are formed and laminated in this order on the translucent substrate 20 to cover the insulating layer 23, and a resist pattern 28 in an independent island shape is formed on the protective film 26. A laminated film 27 constituted of the organic film 24, second electrode material film 25 and protective film 26 is etched with the resist pattern 28 used as a mask, then a layered product 27 constituted of the organic layer 24, second electrode 25 and protective layer 26 is patterned into an independent island shape in this manufacturing method of an organic EL display.
