Abstract: An organic EL device comprises a first electrode consisting of light-reflecting material, an organic layer with an organic luminescent layer and acting as a resonator, and a second electrode consisting of a reflective half-transparent layer and a transparent material. To obtain light resonating with a certain spectrum width, L is minimized provided that (2L)/μ+sg(f)(2π)=m is satisfied, where ζ (in radian) is the phase shift appearing when the light from the organic luminescent layer reflects at both ends of the resonator, L is the optical distance of the resonator, and μ is the peak wavelength of a desired spectrum of light.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the damage caused by a solvent, moisture and plasma of an organic EL layer forming material layer by forming a first electrode made of a transparent conductive material, an organic EL layer containing a layer made of an organic luminescent material, and a second electrode in order on a transparent substrate, and installing a damage preventing film on the second electrode. SOLUTION: An anode 11 made of a transparent conductive ITO film, and an insulating film 12 are formed in order on a transparent substrate 10 made of quartz glass, opening parts 13 are formed on the insulating layer 12 to expose the surface of the anode 11. An organic EL material layer 14 formed by stacking a hole transport layer and an electron transport luminescent layer in order is formed on the anode 11, and a cathode material layer 15 formed by vapor-depositing aluminum is formed on the organic EL material layer 14, and a damage preventing material layer 16 is formed thereon by sputtering SiO2. The damage preventing material layer 16 is masked with a resist pattern 17, the resist pattern 17 is dry-etched to form a damage preventing film 18, a cathode 19, and an organic EL layer 20, and an organic EL element is completed. The selecting capability of materials for forming the cathode and the organic EL layer is widened.

Then, metal (or silicon oxide) film 12a having its support column shaped pattern is formed on the silicon single crystal substrate 11, this metal (or silicon oxide) film 12a is masked, anisotropic etching is performed, the silicon single crystal substrate 11 is selectively eliminated, thereby a support column 10 is formed. Thereafter, an oxide film 10a is formed on the surface of the support column 10 by eliminating the metal (or silicon oxide) film 12a on the support column 10, then performing heat oxidation.
