Abstract: 1,097,615. Electrical storage device. STANDARD OIL CO. July 16, 1965, No. 30418/65. Heading HIM. In the device shown, at least one and preferably both of the electrodes 12 and 13 are of porous material, e.g. graphite or Raney nickel having a surface area above 100 M 2 /cc. The electrodes, with current collectors 15 and 16 and separated by porous asbestos spacer 14 are immersed in a medium 11 which on heat treatment will yield mobile ions, and the device depends on the charge separation occurring at the interface between the highly porous electrode and the ion-containing medium when a potential less than the decomposition potential of the medium is applied to the electrodes. The medium may be a crystalline salt which yields ions on becoming molten, and numerous salts, particularly alkali metal and alkaline earth metal halides are listed. Preferably eutectic mixtures having lower melting points are employed. When the device has been charged, the salt may be allowed to solidify, and remelted when the device is to be used. The casing 10 may incorporate heating means such as resistance wire. Multiple units, illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), may be constructed.
