Abstract: Disclosed is a silicon nitride sintered body produced by subjecting a green compact of a mixed powder composed of 1) a silicon nitride powder having a percentage alpha crystallization of 93% or more and a mean grain diameter of 0.7 mu m or less and 2) 5 to 15% by weight in total of a first sintering aid selected from among rare earth element, yttrium oxide and lanthanide oxides and a second sintering aid consisting of aluminum oxide or nitride and at least one selected from among oxides and nitrides of Mg, Ca and Li, to primary sintering in a nitrogen gas atmosphere under a pressure of 1.1 atm or less at 1500 to 1700 DEG C; and subjecting the sintered body to secondary sintering in a nitrogen gas atmosphere under a pressure of 10 atm or more at the primary sintering temperature or below, thereby giving a sintered body wherein the relative density of the sintered body is 99% or more and the precipitation ratio of an alpha -Si3N4 (including alpha '-sialon) crystal phase to a beta -Si3N4 (including beta '-sialon) crystal phase ranges from 1 : 3 to 1 : 8 in terms of the peak intensity ratio in X-ray diffraction.

Abstract: A fuel injection pump for high pressure injecting gasoline, fuel whose main component is gasoline or light oil having a sulfur content of 0.05% by weight or less by a reciprocation of a piston sliding relative to a cylinder, wherein at least a sliding surface of the piston to slide on the cylinder is made of ceramic and the surface roughness thereof, expressed in ten-point mean surface roughness Rz, is 0.05-0.4 mu m in a direction perpendicular to the sliding direction and 0.2-0.6 mu m in a direction parallel to the sliding direction while the surface roughness expressed in the ten-point mean surface roughness Rz of a cylinder sliding surface corresponding thereto is 0.2-0.8 mu m in a direction parallel to the sliding direction. By using the above combination of piston and cylinder, the wear resistance of the piston and cylinder is improved, the durability thereof is improved and the production cost can be largely reduced.

Abstract: ÄPurposeÜ To provide sliding components each comprising a base metal and, joined thereto, a sliding face member having a sliding face of crowning profile, in particular, sliding components such as valve train parts, a cam follower and a rocker arm of an automobile engine. ÄConstitutionÜ A sliding component having a structure comprising (1) a ceramic forming a sliding face and (2) a base metal joined together, in which the extent of crowning of the sliding face is at least 0.1 to 0.4% of the maximum length of the junction face of the ceramic. The ceramic has a four-point flexural strength of at least 500 MPa as measured in accordance with the Japanese Industrial Standard R1601. The base metal is mainly steel at least the surface of which has preferably a martensite texture and has a hardness of higher than 45 in terms of HRC. The structure may have an intermediate layer of a metal or cermet. In one mode the junction of the sliding face member such as a ceramic of crowning profile is simultaneously carried out with the formation of the base metal part and in another mode the sliding face of the base metal is hardened by the heating after the junction. ÄEffectÜ A sliding component whose extent of crowning is great can be provided at a lowered cost without suffering from defects such as cracking.

Abstract: A silicon nitride ceramic sliding member which comprises Si3N4 grains as a main component and is shaped or controlled in dimensions through hot plastic working wherein the Si3N4 particles mainly comprises beta -type columnar crystal grains. The ceramic sliding member is produced by the step (I) of preparing a preform made of silicon nitride ceramic sintered body comprising Si3N4 grains as a main component wherein the average grain size (average grain size in minor axis in the case of beta -type columnar crystal grains) of the Si3N4 grains is at most 0.5 mu m, and the hot plastic working step (II) of placing the preform in a mold and effecting hot plastic deformation of the preform for shaping or dimensional control thereof while simultaneously increasing the average aspect ratio of the beta -type columnar crystal grains. The resultant sliding member has excellent sliding properties, a high mechanical strength and a high reliability at a low cost without resort to grinding or the like for shaping thereof.

In a production method, the first member is joined to a sliding part body by heating at a temperature of 650 DEG C or higher, and the second member made of a metal is attached to the body at a temperature lower than 650 DEG C by means which does not impair an effect of the hardening treatment. The second member has an HRC hardness of 45 or higher.
