The securing element (34) comprises a driver (41) for transmitting the torque of an actuating device (24), which is attached to the body of the vehicle. Said tailgate (47) further comprises a first locking mechanism (15, 115, 215, 315, 415, 515) for coupling the top part (48) of the tailgate (47) to the vehicle body (10, 110, 210, 310, 410) for a first open position of the tailgate, and a second locking mechanism (16, 116, 216, 316, 416, 516) for coupling the top part (48) and the bottom part (2) of the tailgate (47) to each other to form a unit for a second open position of the tailgate. The invention relates to a split tailgate (1) for a vehicle. Said tailgate (1) comprises an upper part (2), which is pivotably arranged on the body (3), and a lower part (10), which is pivotably arranged on the upper part (2). Said tailgate (1) also has a first device (6) for coupling the upper part (2) of the tailgate (1) to the body (3) for a first opening position of the tailgate, and a second device (13) for coupling the upper part (2) and the lower part (10) of the tailgate to form a unit for a second opening position of the tailgate, wherein the lower part (10) of the tailgate has a lock (14). To provide a tailgate which ensures an opening mechanism which is simple for an operator to use, it is provided that the lower part (10) of the tailgate has a transmission element (20) which transmits a pressure force F 0 , which is applied to the lower part (2) of the tailgate in the first opening position thereof, to a contact element (24) which acts on the first coupling device (6). In this way, the coupling between the upper part (2) of the tailgate and the body (3) is eliminated and the entire tailgate (1) can be opened. The invention also proposes a corresponding method for opening a split tailgate.

The limb (35) comprises a bolt (37) and the frame (30, 30') is provided with a cam element (34) comprising a longitudinal recess (60) for engaging the bolt (37), wherein the cam element (34) comprises a further bolt (41) for transmitting the torque from an operating device mounted on the vehicle body.
