Abstract: Instalación de procesamiento metalúrgico que comprende: (a) un recipiente metalúrgico hueco (11) en cuyo interior se realiza la fusión directa de un material metalífero de carga para descargar metal fundido de forma continua; (b) una pluralidad de paneles de refrigeración (31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40) que forman un revestimiento interno para al menos una parte superior del recipiente (11), teniendo cada panel un conducto interno para la circulación de refrigerante a través del mismo; (c) conectores de entrada y de salida de refrigerante (42) para los paneles (31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40) en ubicaciones distribuidas alrededor del exterior del recipiente (11); caracterizada porque la instalación comprende además: (d) un sistema de circulación de refrigerante (62) para la circulación de refrigerante desde y hacia los conectores de entrada y de salida de refrigerante (42), cuyo sistema de circulación (62) comprende un tubo de carga (66) y un tubo de retorno (67) que se extienden en general horizontalmente al menos parcialmente alrededor del recipiente (11), una primera serie de tubos más pequeños verticales (68) conectados al tubo de carga (66) y a los conectores de entrada de refrigerante (42) y una segunda serie de tubos verticales (69) conectados al tubo de retorno (67) y a los conectores de salida de refrigerante (42); y (e) una estructura de torre (61) que rodea al menos parcialmente el recipiente (11) en la que es soportado el sistema de circulación de refrigerante (62).

Abstract: A direct smelting plant for producing molten metal from a metalliferous feed material is disclosed. The plant includes a fixed smelting vessel to hold a molten bath of metal and slag and a gas space above the bath. The plant also includes means for supplying solids and gas feed materials to the vessel and for tapping molten material from the vessel. The plant also includes at leas t two platforms for supporting plant operators at different heights of the vessel. The metal tapping means and the slag tapping means are located so as to be accessible by plant operators on a cast house platform and the end met al tapping means and the end slag tapping means are located to be accessible by plant operators on an end tap platform that is at a lower height than the ca st house platform.

Abstract: Method of constructing and installing a direct smelting unit comprising a smelting vessel (11). The vessel is prefabricated off site in three modules (11A, 11B, 11C) which are then transported to the installation site where they are hoisted by a crane and deposited sequentially on top of one another and joined together by welding to form a unitary vessel. The vessel modules are prefabricated so as to be internally lined with water cooling panels connected to water inlet and outlet connectors (62) on the exterior of the circumferential wall sections of those modules. A vessel access tower is formed in modules brought together to envelop the tower and carrying water supply and return piping which is connected to the water inlet and outlet connectors (62) of the cooling panels.
