    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the loss of melting matter and solid matter accompanying exhaust gas, by providing an exhaust gas duct, which extends from a refining container, with the first section which has a relatively slight upward inclination to the horizontal, and the second section which extends with a relatively slight gradient to the horizontal, in order. SOLUTION: A refining container for directly refining iron ore has a sidewall 5 which forms a roughly cylindrical barrel including an upper barrel section 51 and a lower barrel section 53, upward from the side 56 of a hearth, and is provided with an extended exhaust gas duct 9 outward from its upper section. Moreover, it has a front furnace 57 and a tap hole 61 for discharging the molten metal continuously. In this case, the exhaust gas duct 9 is provided with the first section 31 which inclines upward at an angle α of about, for example, 7 deg. to the horizontal from an inlet end 63, and the second section 33 with a steep gradient which extends vertically from the other end of the first section 31. As a result, this container minimizes the loss of the molten matter and the solid matter which are discharged together with the exhaust gas.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vessel, producing a metal from a metal-containing charging material by a direct refining method. SOLUTION: The vessel comprises a melting bath having a metallic layer 15 as well as a slag layer 16 and is provided with the continuous space 31 of gas above the slag layer. The vessel comprises a lance/tuyere 13, extended into the vessel to inject oxygen-containing gas into the vessel above the layers of the metal and slag. The vessel comprises also a plurality of pairs of lance/ tuyere 11 to inject the metal-containing charging material and a carbon- containing charging material into the melting bath together with carrier gas and generate the flow of gas from the melting bath. One of the lance/tuyere 11 of the plurality of pairs of the lance/tuyere 11 injects an iron constituent- containing charging material mainly at a temperature higher than 200 deg.C while the other lance/tuyere injects the carbon-containing charging material mainly at the temperature lower than 200 deg.C to produce the flow of gas released from the bath and burn the same, then, transfer the reaction heat after combustion, which is useful for a heat energy for refining the metal-containing material, into the melting bath.

    Abstract: A direct smelting plant for producing molten metal from a metalliferous feed material is disclosed. The plant includes a fixed smelting vessel to hold a molten bath of metal and slag and a gas space above the bath. The plant also includes means for supplying solids and gas feed materials to the vessel and for tapping molten material from the vessel. The plant also includes at least two platforms for supporting plant operators at different heights of the vessel. The metal tapping means and the slag tapping means are located so as to be accessible by plant operators on a cast house platform and the end metal tapping means and the end slag tapping means are located to be accessible by plant operators on an end tap platform that is at a lower height than the cast house platform.

    Abstract: A molten-bath based direct smelting process and apparatus for producing metals from a ferrous material is disclosed. The process includes injecting feed materials being solid material and carrier gas into a molten bath at a velocity of at least 40m/s through at least one downwardly extending solids injection lance having a delivery tube of internal diameter of 40-200mm that is located so that a central axis of an outlet end of the lance is at an angle of 20 to 90 degrees to a horizontal axis. The feed materials injection generates a superficial gas flow of at least 0.04 Nm3/s/m2 within the molten bath at least in part by reactions of injected material in the bath. The gas flow causes molten material to be projected upwardly as splashes, droplets and streams and form an expanded molten bath zone, with the gas flow and the upwardly projected molten material causing substantial movement of material within the molten bath and strong mixing of the molten bath. The feed materials are selected so that, in an overall sense, the reactions of the feed materials in the molten bath are endothermic. The process also includes injecting an oxygen-containing gas into an upper region of the vessel via at least one oxygen gas injection lance and post-combusting combustible gases released from the molten bath.

    Abstract: A molten bath-based process for direct smelting metalliferous material and producing molten metal in a direct smelting vessel that contains a molten bath that has a metal layer that is at least 900 mm deep. The process includes selecting operating parameters of the process so that feed material (solid material and carrier gas) is injected from above the metal layer into the metal layer via at least one solids injection lance with sufficient momentum to penetrate to a depth of at least 100 mm below a nominal quiescent surface of the metal layer to cause upward movement of molten material and gas from the metal layer.
