Abstract:
An intermediate shaft (15) consisting of a solid inner shaft member (30) slidable within a tube member (32). A C-shaped connecting member or clip (40) is inserting into a pair of opposed holes (35) in tube member (32). The ends (42) of connecting member (40) engage a shoulder (33) on the shaft member (30) to prevent the two portions (the shaft member and the tube member) of the intermediate member (15) from disengaging. The shaft member (30) and the tube member (32) are slidable relative to one another to accommodate movement of the front axle and the steering gear mechanism (14).
Abstract:
A resilient seal member (46), fixed to one of an inner bearing ring (44) and an outer bearing ring (42), engages a contact member (54) fixed to the other bearing ring to close an annulus between the bearing rings. The resilient seal member (46) has at least one resilient lip (60) forming an interference fit with a contact surface (62) of the contact member. The contact surface (62) is configured such that misalignment of the inner bearing (44) with respect to the outer bearing ring (42) does not significantly change the amount of interference between the resilient lip and the contact surface. The contact surface (62) may be substantially spherical or conical.
Abstract:
A thrust washer (42) has a radially directed annular portion providing a first raceway (58) and an axially directed annular flange (52). A subassembly (46) comprising a plurality of rollers (56), in rolling contact with the raceway, retained axially and radially in roller cage (50), has a pilot surface facing the axially directed annular flange. Friction reducing means (66, 82) between the pilot surface and the axially directed annular flange reduces friction between the pilot surface and the flange while maintaining concentricity of the subassembly (46) relative to the thrust washer (42).
Abstract:
A flat, thin ring is formed into a modified ring having bridge material between adjacent, initial ball pockets (14). Movable anvils (12) having a rounded surface are positioned within the initial ball pockets and the bridge material is reformed such that a substantially flat bridge is formed between adjacent final ball pockets conforming to more than a 180 degree circumference of the rounded surface. The movable anvils (12) are then moved such that the final ball pockets do not conform to more than a 180 degree circumference of the rounded surface to facilitate removal of the movable anvils (12) from the final ball pockets. A method of assembling a ball bearing assembly is also described.
Abstract:
A double-walled bearing cup (14) has an inner cup portion (22) and an outer cup portion (20) fixed over the inner cup portion. Abutment portions of the bearing cup are engageable with a retaining washer (18), which is positioned within the bearing cup and adapted to be fixed over a shaft (12), to limit axial movement of the bearing cup relative to the shaft. Rolling member (16) positioned within the bearing cup (14) are engageable directly with the shaft such that the bearing cup may freely rotate with respect to the shaft. The bearing cup may have an open, closed, or tapered end to facilitate use of the bearing assembly in various applications.
Abstract:
A double cardan universal joint (10) having a pair of annular ring yokes (30) pivotally connected by a tubular coupling yoke (20). Specific examples are provided of using the double cardan universal joint as a non-constant velocity joint in a three universal joint steering system whereby the three univeral joint system operates at constant velocity.
Abstract:
Two support arms of a bearing support member (12) extend in opposite directions, each support arm (28, 30) having an overlying bearing cup (36) engageable with a rocker arm (10). A bearing sleeve (32) is mounted over each support arm (28, 30) between the respective bearing cup and the bearing support member (12) to provide an inner raceway. Each bearing sleeve has sufficient radial clearance with respect to the respective support arm (28, 30) such that the bearing sleeve (32) precesses with oscillation of the rocker arm (10). Rolling members within an annulus formed between the bearing support member (12) and each bearing cup allow the rocker arm (10) to freely oscillate rotatably with respect to the bearing support member (12). A bearing assembly for mounting within a rocker arm (10) is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A bearing cage (10) for a roller bearing. The bearing cage comprising first and second annular end rims (32, 34) axially spaced along a common axis (36) and cross bars (38) connecting the end rims such that pockets (40) are formed between the end rims and the cross bars for retaining the rollers (42). Axially outward surfaces (52, 54) of the end rims define the axial length of the bearing cage and include at least one recess (56) for facilitating passage of lubricant to the rollers (42).
Abstract:
A sensor system for detecting gear modes of an automobile transmission is disposed about a detent lever (11) internally within the transmission case. The system includes an encoder (4) capable of generating a magnetic field disposed on or about a detent lever, and at least one sensor (1, 2, 3), such as a Hall-effect sensor, disposed opposite the encoder (4). The encoder (4) is a magnetic strip having at least one track encoded thereon, wherein the sensor is juxtaposed with the encoded such that it produces a digital signal representative of the position of the encoder means and the corresponding gear mode.
