Abstract: PURPOSE: To produce a high-modulus carbon fiber capable of exhibiting excellent compression modulus when processed into a composite material by subjecting a precursor to graphitization in the presence of boron in a rare gas atmosphere free from nitrogen. CONSTITUTION: A precursor is produced by wet-dry spinning of a spinning stock solution containing 20% of a polymer prepared by solution polymerization of 98% of acrylonitrile with 2% of methacrylonitrile in dimethyl sulfoxide solvent, coagulating the spun material in an aqueous solution of dimethyl sulfoxide, washing it with water, subjecting to drawing, applying oil, drying to make condensed and further subjecting to steam drawing. The obtained precursor is made to flame resistant by heating in air and subjecting to graphitization at >=2000 deg.C in an argon gas atmosphere substantially free from nitrogen in the presence of baron. The obtained high modulus carbon fiber contains >=0.1% of boron and has tensile modulus of >=35×10 kgf/mm , interlaminar shear strength of >=5kgf/mm and B/C and N/C ratios determined by photoelectric spectrometry of >=0.0005 and

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject fiber having low apparent specific gravity and high specific strength and useful as a primary structural material for aircraft by subjecting a fine hollow acrylic fiber to fire-resisting treatment in an oxidizing atmosphere at a specific temperature and carbonizing in an inert atmosphere at high temperature. CONSTITUTION:A hollow acrylic fiber (preferably having a hollowness of 10-30%) having a single fiber fineness of =1000 deg.C (preferably 1200-1600 deg.C) to obtain the objective fiber having a hollowness of 4-40% and a tensile strength of >=350kg/mm .
