Abstract: A document feeding apparatus feeds a document (18) from the endmost position (22) of a stack of documents (10) into a document path (34) using a vacuum suction head operating through an aperture (36) in a baseplate (16). A vacuum source (38) attracts a document (18) to the suction head (40) during a return stroke (50). No vacuum is applied during a forward stroke (48). The vacuum source (38) comprises a reciprocal air pump (54, 108) having a potential energy store (66, 90) used to power a rapid vacuum-creating return stroke despite a low-power drive source (44, 96) to power the forward stroke. A barrel-pump (54) or bellows device (108) can be used as the reciprocal air pump. The vacuum-creating return stroke can be initiated either by solenoid (78) release or by operation of a cam (98) beyond a first angular position.

Abstract: A monitor (18, 26, 28) monitors movement of paper (12) through a printer (16). The paper movement sensors (18, 26) comprise one central wheel (70) or a pair of spaced edge wheels (158) each operating an individual photo-optic wheel (164, 76). By counting pulses from the photo-optic wheels (76, 164) monitor logic (28) determines conditions of jam, over-feeding and skew within the printer (16) both on an instantaneous and on a short term cumulative basis. The system self-calibrates through an initializing routine and later, continuously during operation. Paper movement sensors (18, 26) are provided in dust-protected housings which can be chained together to provide monitoring facilities at many points.

Abstract: Apparatus for use in a fiber optic transmission system having a variable bit rate and a variable duty cycle. The system senses data bit transitions of bi-phase encoded data, and provides a restored clock frequency corresponding to a clock encoded in the bi-phase data. Midbit zero data transmissions are distinguished from the transitions denoting the beginning and end of a data pulse to define the pulse duty cycle. A logic circuit transfers operation between high speed and low speed modes of operation.

Abstract: A printer is provided with a band (44) attached to the printhead (54) to move to-and-fro across the line of printing, and around rollers (98, 110) allowing it to pass beneath a printing support bed (12) so that introduced documents and documents being printed are restrained from excessive separation from the printing support bed (12). The band (44) is supported in association with the printhead (54) by non-return cylinders (58, 64) capable only of uni-directional rotation. Each cylinder (58, 64) is provided with a rotary spring (76) which takes up any excess length developing in the band (44). Spring loaded rollers (98, 110) at either end of the printing path support the band (44). Electrical indication is provided when one, the other or both of the cylinders (58, 64) cease to take up excess length and when one, the other or both of the spring loaded rollers (98, 110) also cease to take up excess length in the band (44). Operation of the printer is inhibited when any selected one or group of electrical signals indicates exhaustion of tension in the band (44). A signal is provided triggered by intermittent operation of an electrical detector with movement of the head indicating imminent shut-down of the printer or exhaustion of tension.

Abstract: A series of nodal processors (10, 20,...N) and each processor includes a nodal weight delay circuit (36), delay schedule (46), and decision algorithm circuit (56). Each nodal processor is cross-connected to every other processor by lines (19). Each nodal processor (10, 20, etc.) output is fed to the network history memory (18) which provides the ''status'' of each nodal processor on each machine cycle. The processor-controller (70) then senses when the outputs of the nodal processors have settled into a relative ''unchanging state'' indicating that system energy (E) has been minimized and represents an optimum state.

Abstract: A module, for interconnecting integrated circuits which is comprised of a substrate (10), a layer of polyimide (11) disposed thereon, and a plurality of spaced apart copper conductors (12) on the layer of polyimide. This module is dipped into a solution of palladium chloride, thereafter it is dipped into a solution of sodium hydroxide, and thereafter it is dipped into an electroless plating solution for cobalt. As a result, a film of cobalt (14) is deposited on all exposed surfaces of the copper conductors, but no cobalt is deposited on the exposed polyimide surface between the conductors. This cobalt film protects the copper conductors from corrosion, and it does not short the conductors together.

Abstract: An I/O processor (22) and memory (12) where a number of queues or linked control blocks (IOCB 1 and IOCB 2) are maintained for each device connected to the I/O processor (22), there is a control block for every operation to be performed by a particular device. A device may be an I/O bus (13a), a controller unit (14) or a peripheral unit (15), the I/O processor (22) maintains a table (46) of different combinations of buses and peripheral controllers that may be used to access a given peripheral unit (15) and selects that combination with the least frequency of use. A portion of main memory (12) is assigned as a single cache so that when the I/O processor (22) accesses a data segment in one of many disk drives (15), the entire disk drive track (59a, b and c) being accessed is read into the assigned cache portion of main memory since following data requests would most likely be made therefrom. The I/O system (13) is provided with a Task Control Processor (21) which provides for the scheduling of the different central processors (10) for the highest priority processes to be run. When an initiate I/O operation is detected, the respective processor (10) is released from the process that it is currently running and can be assigned to the next highest priority process. When requested I/O operation has been completed, the Task Control Processor (13) is signalled so that the Task Control Processor (13) can put the requesting process back into the priority list of processes to be run by the main central processors (10).

Abstract: A hub (4) for multimedia multipoint video teleconferencing includes having a plurality of input/output ports (22), each of which may be coupled to a communication channel (12) for interchanging teleconferencing signals with remote sites (2). The hub (2) includes a plurality of signal processing functions (30) that can be selectively applied to teleconferencing signals so that the signals distributed by the hub (4) are in a form desired by the recipients or required by their equipment. Signal processing may include video, data, graphics, and communication protocol or format conversion, and language translation. The hub (4) may generate data (82) relating to the use of its processing capabilities during a teleconference, so that accounting or billing for a teleconference may be based at least in part on which hub resources were used, the extent of their use, and the person desiring their use. The identification of a signal processing function (30) to be used during a teleconference may be automatically performed in response to the content of signals received at the hub (4) during the teleconference.
