Abstract: A method of bonding a plurality of articles together with an organic adhesive by using a primer that provides increased crack propagation resistance without the use of organic solvents. The method comprises reacting aluminum, titanium, silicon, iron, or zirconium with HBr or HCI. The reaction product is oxidized with a water soluble oxidizing agent to form a hydrasol. The hydrasol is then mixed with an organofunctional silane to form the primer. The primer is applied to the surface of an adherend prior to the application of adhesive.

Abstract: Combined Abrasive/Amorphous Hydrated Metal Oxide Primer as a Surface Treatment for Organic Adhesively Bonded Titanium Joints A method of adhesively bonding articles, at least one of which is a titanium alloy, resulting in a joint resistant to crack propagation. A layer of metal alkoxide is applied to the titanium article and the metal alkoxide layer is exposed to heat and moisture. A polymeric adhesive is disposed between the articles and pressure and optionally heat are applied to the articles. The improvement comprises exposing the surface of the titanium article, prior to application of the metal alkoxide, to a substantially noncorrosive, nonanodic environment and abrasively treating the titanium article.

Abstract: A method of making a polymeric composite wherein the polymeric composite is more oxidatively stable. The method comprises reacting aluminum, titanium, silicon, or zirconium with HBr or HI2, oxidizing the reaction product to form a hydrosol and applying the hydrosol to the fiber surface prior to incorporation in a polymeric composite. The composite exhibits greater oxidative stability as it is exposed to temperatures of about 100 DEG C to about 900 DEG C.

Abstract: A method of bonding articles together utilizing a short term corrosive pretreatment prior to application of an amorphous hydrated metal oxide primer and an adhesive resulting in a joint resistant to crack propagation. The method comprises bonding a plurality of articles together, at least one of which is metal. The surface of the metal article is exposed to a corrosive environment at a temperature less than about 50 DEG C. Then a layer comprising Mx(OR)y wherein x is 1, y is 3 or 4, M is any metal capable of forming a stable alkoxide and R is an organic radical, is applied to the pretreated surface. Then the coated metal article is exposed to moisture and a temperature of about 25 DEG C to about 125 DEG C. The metal article is bonded to another article with a polymeric adhesive.

Abstract: Water Soluble Polyimide Resin System The present invention is directed toward a process for making water soluble polyimide resin systems. The process comprises preparing a solution of a polyamic acid in an organic solvent, adding water to the solution to cause the polyamic acid to precipitate, filtering the precipitated acid, washing the precipitated acid with water to remove the organic solvent and then reacting the washed acid with a water soluble amine forming the water soluble amine salt of the polyamic acid. This polyamic acid salt may then be converted to the polyimide by heating. These water soluble polyamide systems allow for safer application of polyimide coatings to substrates.
