Abstract: A rotating control head or rotary blow out preventer (rotary BOP) includes a bearing assembly which has a pressurised fluid. The fluid, which may be lubricant, is pressurised by a pressure compensation mechanism comprising two chambers 2615, 2630 which are separated by a piston 2610. One chamber 2615 is in fluid communication 2645 with the bearing assembly; the other chamber 2630 is in fluid communication with an external fluid pressure and also has the urging force of a spring biasing member 2605. The external fluid pressure can be either borehole or seawater fluid pressure.

Abstract: A system for forming a subsea borehole is provided, whereby the borehole is formed by utilising a rotatable pipe P, and a fluid. The system comprises a subsea housing 14 that is positioned above the borehole. A bearing assembly 28 is mounted with the housing, the bearing assembly featuring an inner 36 and outer 38 member, with the inner member rotatable relative to the outer member, and with a passage within it allowing the rotatable pipe to extend through the bearing assembly. A seal is also provided to seal the bearing with the rotatable pipe. Finally, a holding member 24 is employed to locate the entire bearing assembly within the subsea housing. Numerous other embodiments are disclosed, some utilising a feature whereby the fluid pressure in the system can be increased to control borehole pressure.

Pressure relief mechanisms release excess pressure in the subsea housing and a pressure compensation mechanism pressurize bearings in the bearing assembly at a predetermined pressure.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for circulating fluid in a wellbore includes a bottom sub 130 having a bottom sub port and a mandrel 35, wherein the mandrel 35 substantially forms an inner bore of the circulating tool and includes a mandrel port. The circulating tool may also include an activation piston 46 that is movable in a first direction and a port piston 64 movable in a second direction when the activation piston 46 moves in the first direction. The circulating tool may further include an inner sleeve 90 coupled to the port piston 64 and movable with the port piston, the inner sleeve 90 having an inner sleeve port in selective communication with the mandrel port. When the inner sleeve port is in communication with the mandrel port at least partially, circulating fluid is allowed to flow through the bottom sub port to the wellbore.
