Abstract: An inductive-type rotary encoder (2) capable of generating an output signal indicative of the angular position of a rotor (4) to a stator (6) is disclosed. The rotary encoder (2) includes a stator (6) having at least one conductive pattern on one side thereof, and a rotor (4) having another conductive pattern on one side thereof which faces the at least one conductive pattern of the stator (6). The conductive patterns are inductively coupled to one another so as to generate an output signal indicative of the angular position of the rotor (4) relative to the stator (6). In order to reduce the overall size and number of parts required, the circuitry for energizing the stator conductive pattern(s) and for generating the output signal can be provided on a printed circuit board, the opposite side of which contains the at least one stator conductive pattern. In order to reduce noise as well as to reduce the first harmonic error, lead lines for attaching the stator and rotor conductive patterns to the controlling circuitry and a return line which extends along substantially the entire length of the rotor or stator conductive patterns and attaches to one of the lead lines are provided and specially located relative to undulations of the conductive patterns. Additionally, the length of spokes which define undulations of the respective rotor and stator conductive patterns can be controlled to improve the performance of the rotary encoder. A rotary encoder (2) including inductively coupled rotor and stator conductive patterns for generating a relative angular position (or rotary speed) of the rotor (4) relative to the stator (6), as well as stator and rotor index pulse patterns inductively coupled for generating an index pulse once per revolution of the rotor relative to the stator is also provided.

Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for the use of an optical sensor to determine the position of a printing device relative to a piece of paper or a paper-handling surface. The optical sensor reads marks to detect movement and/or direction of movement or spacing of imprints on the paper. Benefits include swath stitching calibration, color to color registration, producing printing device alignment data and generating information for printing device firing signals. The present invention is applicable to a wide field of printing technologies, including, but not limited to, acoustic ink printing, thermal ink jet printing, piezo ink jet printing, ionographic printing and a variety of other printing technologies involving the need for positioning a printing device relative to a piece of paper.

Abstract: Embodiments herein measure current/voltage levels of a drive motor when med ia is in contact with a drive roller so as to determine the drive force imparte d by the drive rollers on the media. Then, embodiments herein can reference the predetermin ed relationship between roller drive force and media/drive roller velocity rati os to determine a difference between the velocity of the drive roller and the velocity the media based on the drive force. Once this velocity difference is determined, embodiments herein can change the current/voltage levels being applied to the drive motor if the actual velocity of the media is different than the intended velocity of the media so as to correct the velocity of the media. Thus, when referencing the predetermined relationship, embodiments herein produce a velocity ratio correction factor. This velocity ratio correction factor can be applied continuously during any velocity profile of the drive motor, or i t can be used to calculate the accumulated error in sheet position and then to apply a correction near the end of the velocity profile. 24

Abstract: A sheet registration system, especially for printers, with a lower cost and lower mass system for sheets deskewing, and optionally also compatibly providing transverse registration repositioning of the sheets. Mechanisms are disclosed which need only one main drive motor to drive both of the two spaced apart sheet feeding nips, together with a much lower power, and lower cost, deskewing differential drive system for providing the relative differential angular movement of the two spaced sheet feeding nips to achieve the desired amount of sheet deskewing movement, without interrupting the forward feeding movement of the sheet.
