    Abstract: An inkjet printhead has been developed that includes an ink reservoir vent, which prevents ink from exiting the ink reservoir through the vent. The inkjet printhead includes a reservoir, an ink inlet, a vent opening, and a vent member. The reservoir contains a supply of ink and an air space above the supply of ink. The vent member extends from the vent opening and includes a first vent member opening positioned in an air space outside of the reservoir, a second vent member opening positioned in the air space above the supply of ink, and a vent channel configured to couple fluidly the first vent member opening to the second vent member opening. The second vent member opening is positioned within the reservoir to enable the second vent member opening to remain within the air space above the supply of ink regardless of a printhead orientation.

    Abstract: A solid ink print head reservoir (10) includes a plate (12) having first and second sides (90,92) and a passage extending through said plate. The plate defines an angled channel (98) in communication with the passage and an outlet region (102). The outlet regions are located at the apex of angled portion of the channels, thus when purging the air bubbles, a minimal amount of ink is required. The angle or slope of the channel is determined such that large bubble generate enough unconstrained buoyancy to overcome the surface tension holding them in position.

    Abstract: A volumetric container for storing ink in a solid inkjet printer includes a housing 204 and a heater element 212 positioned within the housing. The heater element is positioned in the container to melt solid ink quickly to enable printing operations. The housing is thermally insulating and preferably formed from a thermoset plastics material. The heater element may include material having a high positive temperature coefficient, such as a perforated block or plurality of convoluted sections of PTC material. The heater may alternatively be a silicone or polyamide film laminate, encapsulating a heating film or trace. The heater element is preferably positioned so that solid ink in closest proximity to an outlet 224 in communication with a printing apparatus 250 is melted more quickly than the remainder of solid ink in the container.

    Abstract: A printhead reservoir includes at least one ink reservoir to hold ink and at least one umbilical to deliver ink to the ink reservoir under pressure. A filter resides between the umbilical and the ink reservoir having meniscus strength sufficient enough to prevent the reservoir from draining when the pressure is removed or if a pressure is applied downstream of the filter. The filter may reside above the ink reservoir to further reduce the ink drain back. The reservoir may also include a weir plate to allow the filter to reside below the ink level.
