    Abstract: A development system including a developer transport adapted for depositing developer material on an imaging surface having an electrostatic latent image thereon, including a housing defining a chamber storing a supply of developer material including toner. A donor member is mounted partially in said chamber and spaced from the imaging surface, for transporting developer on an outer surface thereof to a region opposed from the imaging surface. The donor member has a magnetic assembly, which includes a plurality of poles, and a sleeve, enclosing said magnetic assembly and rotating about said magnetic assembly. A sensor measures a magnetic field of said donor roll at a predefined position on said donor roll. A magnetic system generates a magnetic field to reduce developer bed height of said developer material on said donor member in a development zone.

    Abstract: A resonator (100) for generating vibratory energy is arranged in line contact with a charge-retentive member (10) bearing an image on a surface thereof, in an electrophotographic device, to apply vibratory energy uniformly to the charge-retentive member. The resonator comprises a suction device ( 162), a suction hron ( 158), and an air-tight seal arrangement. When the vibratory energy is to be applied to the charge-retentive surface, suction is applied at the line of contact of the horn with the surface, to draw the surface into intimate engagement with the horn. The invention has application to a transfer station, for enhancing electrostatic transfer of toner from the charge-retentive surface to a copy sheet, and to a cleaning station, where mechanical vibration of the surface will improve the release of residual toner remaining after transfer.

    Abstract: A self biasing transfer member (10) for transferring toner particles (17) from an image support surface (15) to a copy substrate (16), including a conformable layer (13) and a layer (14) of piezoelectric material thereover which generates an electric field when deformed. In one embodiment the transfer member is a roll (10) having an axial core (12) about which the conformable layer is cylindrically formed, and the piezoelectric material is a film circumferentially surrounding the conformable layer. The transfer member is urged against the imaging support surface to form a nip (22) which causes the conformable layer to conform thereagainst and deform the piezoelectric material. In another embodiment, a blade (50) is used to clean and deform the transfer member.

    Abstract: The appts for creating colour images in a single pass of a charge retentive surface past a number of process stations, includes a charge retentive surface and a member for forming latent electrostatic images on the charge retentive surface. A number developer structures, each include a donor member for conveying charged toner particles of a different colour from the other developer structures for depositing toner particles in a spot on spot manner onto the latent electrostatic images. A member is provided for electrically biasing each of the developer structures. The electrical bias for each developer structure is controlled at different voltage levels, whereby varying amounts of toner may be deposited on the latent electrostatic images from each of the developer structures in accordance with the colour of the image to be created. Signals are generated representative of the surface potential of the donor member for each of the developer structures. A unit responds to the signals and adjusts the biases applied to the developer structures for compensating for the effects of the surface potential on each development structure.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for printing including the use of a pyroelectric material (12) in a novel fashion to directly mark an image on a print substrate (40). The image is produced by initially coating a poled pyroelectric material (12) with a uniform coating of charged marking particles and subsequently thermally exposing the pyroelectric material (12) in a localised fashion, thus reversing the polarity of the charge which repels the particles from the surface of the pyroelectric material (12), and in the direction of the surface of a print substrate (40) placed in close proximity thereto. Subsequently, the image formed by the transferred marking particles is fixed to the substrate (40) by a thermal or other well known fusing treatment.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively depositing positive and negative ions on a receptor. In the preferred embodiment, the ions are deposited in image configuration from a single source 25 of both positive and negative ions. The source 25 comprises a pair of electrodes 46, 48 separated by a dielectric 44. A hole 52 in one of the electrides 48 enables the extraction of either positive or negative ions by the application of a suitable voltage 58 or 62 through a switch 60. The positive and negative images are subsequently developed with different color toners in order to form a highlight color image.
