    Abstract: A development apparatus (200a,200b) for a printing machine (10) having a flexible endless belt (205) entrained around a driven roller (210) and a deflector or protruding member (215). The flexible belt serves as a developer donor member with the protruding member spacing the flexible belt a suitable distance from a latent image bearing photoreceptor (20), so that the latent image is developed by the touchdown development method. Developer is loaded onto the flexible member by any suitable means, such as, a magnetic brush (220). The protruding member locally stretches or bends the flexible belt to cause a reduction in the net force of adhesion of the developer in the locally stretched region of the flexible belt, so that the release of the developer is facilitated to improve the quality of development of the latent images on the photoreceptor.

    Abstract: A development system including a developer transport adapted for depositing developer material on an imaging surface having an electrostatic latent image thereon, including a housing defining a chamber storing a supply of developer material including toner. The donor member has a magnetic assembly, which includes a plurality of poles, and a sleeve, enclosing said magnetic assembly and rotating about said magnetic assembly. A sensor measures a magnetic field of said donor roll at a predefined position on said donor roll. A magnetic system generates a magnetic field to reduce developer bed height of said developer material on said donor member in a development zone.

    Abstract: A resonator (100) for generating vibratory energy is arranged in line contact with a charge-retentive member (10) bearing an image on a surface thereof, in an electrophotographic device, to apply vibratory energy uniformly to the charge-retentive member. The resonator comprises a suction device ( 162), a suction hron ( 158), and an air-tight seal arrangement. When the vibratory energy is to be applied to the charge-retentive surface, suction is applied at the line of contact of the horn with the surface, to draw the surface into intimate engagement with the horn. The invention has application to a transfer station, for enhancing electrostatic transfer of toner from the charge-retentive surface to a copy sheet, and to a cleaning station, where mechanical vibration of the surface will improve the release of residual toner remaining after transfer.

    Abstract: An acoustic scavengeless assist (ASA) development apparatus (40, 42, 44), forms part of a multicolor image reproduction machine (Fig. 1). The (ASA) development apparatus includes a biased vibratory section (46) having a piezoelectric member (85) and a donor member (88), as well as, a development electrode section (59), for presenting toner particles to latent electrostatic images for image development. The donor member (88) is positioned within the reproduction machine and forms a development nip with a latent image bearing surface (10) of a photoreceptor of the reproduction machine. Importantly, the biased vibratory section has at least a first conductive electrode (67) formed therein adjacent to said piezoelectric member (85) for effecting controlled vibratory toner release from the donor member (88), and a first bias for biasing the at least first conductive electrode. The development electrode section includes a set of second conductive electrodes (66) and a second bias (70) therefor, and is located between the at least first electrode (67) and the latent image bearing surface (10), for enhancing toner particle release from the donor member (88), and powder cloud formation within the development nip for quality image development.

    Abstract: A cylindrical and rotatable resonating assembly, generally for use in electrostatographic applications. The resonating assembly is preferably positioned along a longitudinal axis generally transverse to the process direction of movement of a toner bearing member, for applying uniform vibratory energy thereto. The cylindrical form of the resonating assembly allows for rotation of the assembly while remaining in contact with the image bearing member to reduce frictional forces between a contact surface of the resonating assembly and the image bearing member which, in turn, reduces wear of the resonating assembly as well as the image bearing member. The resonating assembly may include a plurality of discrete individual resonator elements, each including a vibratory energy producing segment, such as a piezoelectric transducer, for generating vibratory energy and a waveguide segment coupled to the vibratory energy producing segment for transporting the vibratory energy from the transducer to the image bearing member.
