    Abstract: The book imager (2) includes a support (4), for placement of a book (6) in an open position, an imager (12) having opposed imaging surfaces capable of simultaneously imaging the entire exposed, facing adjacent pages of the book in a distortion preventing manner, and an air jet page turning system. The support and the imager are relatively movable toward and away from one another, from one position in which imaging is effected, to another in which page turning is effected. The air jet page turning system includes a fluffing jet for separating pages, a pick-off jet for separating the topmost page from the fluffed pages, a force applying jet for urging the topmost page into intimate contact with the imaging device and a page turning jet for driving the topmost page to the opposite side of the book.

    Abstract: A printer includes an active matrix liquid crystal display (AMLCD) light valve with a matrix of a plurality of filter elements, a backlight that emits a plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy that correspond to the plurality of filter elements, and a multi-layer photoreceptor that is sensitive to the plurality of wavelengths of electromagnetic energy. The backlight flash exposes the AMLCD light valve. The distinct wavelengths of electromagnetic energy passing through each of the filter elements of the AMLCD light valve are focused onto the surface of the photoreceptor. Each layer of the photoreceptor is sensitive to only one of the distinct wavelengths of electromagnetic energy passing through the filter elements of the AMLCD light valve. Thus, a full color latent image is flash exposed onto the photoreceptor. A very compact lenslet array is used to focus the image onto the photoreceptor. This reduces the overall space requirements of the printer, making it readily suitable for desktop applications.

    Abstract: The present invention is a digital printer that comprises the novel combination of a two-dimensional light valve (34), a backlight (36) that illuminates the entire two dimensional light valve, a driver (32) coupled to the light valve (34), the backlight (36) and an outside source (33) of digital image data, an imaging system (38), and a photoreceptor belt (40). The digital data representing the desired image is fed into the driver (32) from an outside source (33). The light valve (34) is then set according to the digital data by the driver. Once the light valve is set, the driver signals the backlight to illuminate the light valve in the manner of a flash exposure. The image (42) produced is then focused by an imaging system onto the surface of a photoreceptor belt (40) - thus exposing and capturing a latent image. In another aspect of the present invention, very compact lenslet arrays are employed in lieu of traditional optics. This reduces the overall space requirements of the presently claimed digital printer - making it readily suitable for desktop application.

    Abstract: The present invention is a digital imaging system (30) for a copier that comprises a full-frame, two-dimensional sensor array (42) to capture a document's (32) image and a full-frame output light valve with backlight (36) to flash expose the image onto a photoreceptor belt. The document is flash exposed to illuminate the page (32) and the full-page image is captured by the full-frame, two dimensional sensor array (42). The sensor array (42) then reads out the digital image data in response to a driver (46). The data is then input into the full-frame digital output light valve (50). The driver (46) provides for the synchronous control of the system. Optionally, an electronic subsystem may perform digital image processing according to user demand - before the data arrives at the output light valve (50). After image processing (if any), the digital data, supplied to the full-page output light valve (50), forms a pattern on the display according to the data. The patterned image is then flash exposed by a backlight (36), through the light valve (50), and onto a photoreceptor (56).
